@CliffsEsport It's not viable for me because we have no gas service, and the available power capacity to that room is a single 240V... 30A, I think? or is it 40? breaker.Tankless heaters may use less average power but the peak demand during flow is much higher and I can't support that.My options are resistive tanked or heat pump and heat pump looks the better choice.

@CliffsEsport But the install will be a royal pain because I need to:* Demolish the drywall enclosure around the water heater the previous owners put there for some monumentally stupid reason* Turn off the water, drain and disconnect the old heater, temporarily cap the pipes, physically remove it* Construct ~1m of new insulated wood frame wall over what is currently bare concrete foundation behind/adjacent to the water heater. This will take several days of waiting for multiple coats of foamboard glue, drywall mud, and paint to dry with just a few minutes of work at the end of each step to sand/paint the ~2.5 m^2 of wall* Once the wall is finished, install and set up the new water heater ~15cm offset from where the existing one is currently located, possibly extending pipes slightly to make up for the shift

@janamarie @gsuberland @CursedFootprint You are literally the first person I have ever seen who likes AQFN.What are the advantages over a BGA? Smaller pitch, tighter alignment tolerances, worse self centering, needs finer PCB design rules... Seems universally worse

@failedLyndonLaRouchite @iris 15 minutes notice?? routine maintenance is something that should be scheduled days if not weeks in advance.I can understand short/zero notice if it's "active leak spraying on expensive equipment, loss of your in-progress synthesis is a price worth paying to avoid much more expensive damage". But not for something planned.

@mhoye yeeeah this is something I have tried really hard to avoid in ngscopeclient.Completely aside from slop code (which we have a project-wide ban on) even in the v0.x series I've tried hard to ensure no breaking changes that will result in old user sessions failing to load, going back to the very first version with file serialization support.Sometimes there are unavoidable changes that require the end user to reconfigure something because the interface to a filter graph block has changed, but that's the point of the v0.x series - there is inherently less of an expectation of stability than after 1.0 and it allows an early-stage project to correct design mistakes from its infancy. Making a v1.0 release implies a much higher degree of stability and reliability and is (or should be) a far more major commitment. And we document them when they happen.

But that's also a game which has a lower expectation of stability than a serious engineering tool (even one in relatively early development).And that's pretty much what we do...* git head can change anything at any time for any reason, and will sometimes come with a request to users to test a particular sweeping change that we can't easily regression test locally* a patch release should not result in any end-user visible changes other than new features becoming available* a new minor version in the v0.x series is generally not allowed to permanently break anything (e.g. make old files not load anymore, or remove a previously working feature), but is allowed to make documented interface changes that temporarily mess something up until the end user reconfigures their project to match the new way things are done

Cursed networking things I recently learned:1) There are two, mutually incompatible, standards for running 40GbE over a single multimode fiber pair.One uses CWDM with four wavelengths (850/880/910/940 nm) mapping each 10G serdes lane to a wavelength. This also supports 100G.The other uses only two wavelengths (850 and 900), gearboxing two serdes lanes onto each, with an optical data rate of 20 Gbps per wavelength. Since the lasers/gearboxes can't run at 50 Gbps NRZ it won't support 100G.Of course, I have some QSFPs of each type.2) Mellanox ConnectX6 NICs normally aren't picky about optic vendor codes.The one exception is dual speed 40/100G optics. They'll happily run anybody's dual speed optic at 100G, or a single speed generic 40G optic at 40G. But if you want to run a dual speed one at 40G it needs to be Mellanox branded for some reason.
