So, it's true... Home-made 5 spice powder is pretty nice, and very easy to make. We ran out, so I toasted fennel, cassia, star anice, sichuan pepper, black pepper and cloves, put them in the spice grinder fixture of the blender, then toasted more sichuan pepper and star anise, ground that down -- and in ten minutes I have pretty good smelling five spice powder. That's quicker than going to the shop to buy a jar of pre-made!

@lumi My hands still smell deliciously of spices because I did the grinding, moved everything @halla didn't need for the recipe to a jar, and cleaned the (ridiculously expensive but good investment) blender attachment.

@irina @lumi Okay... I'm nearing sixty, and I needed being out of the store-bought stuff to try this. (Oh, and the expensive blender accessory.)But, $DIETIES... Freshly roasted, freshly used, blended until it pleased my nose, it made such a difference.
