Here's yet another way in which LLMs are wasteful. You've surely heard about using them together with fuzzer harnesses to find bugs, right? Here's what you didn't hear: because not all of the reported bugs are public people keep rediscovering the same bugs over and over. I've got bug reports that aren't serious enough to prioritize fixing which have already *multiple duplicates*, and they keep being reported.Great use of electricity BTW, I hope you have enough money to pay for those tokens.

@gabrielesvelto I'd say that more than a matter of how much resources it consumes (which is still a big deal) the real concern is how the world is prioritizing this over anything else. Resources are removed from other contexts to reroute them to LLMs even in cases where the project is so minor that it won't deliver any meaningful value 😕

@_amol_ this is clearly unsustainable: https://finance.yahoo.com/sectors/technology/articles/goldman-sachs-spots-troubling-big-191300302.html> The five largest AI hyperscalers, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle, are expected to spend a combined $755 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, according to consensus estimates cited in the report. With that kind of money you could have hired enough engineers to rewrite the entire software stack several times over.

@gabrielesvelto@mas.to @_amol_@fosstodon.org if only the bubble would just burst already...

@jibsaram @_amol_ it will. Just looking at those numbers is enough to make you realize this is going nowhere. If every single human being currently living on earth would give them 100$ they would still not break even after all they spent in the past four years... and that's without considering what they still want to spend on it.

@gabrielesvelto@mas.to @_amol_@fosstodon.org yeah I know it will, but every day it doesn't burst is seemingly another day with large amounts of damages caused.
