@jscholes@dragonscave.space @zersiax@cupoftea.social @KaraLG84@dragonscave.space as I interpret it, the official announcement post says that Eleventy is "going away" and it will become Build Awesome:https://www.11ty.dev/blog/build-awesome/The intro specifically describes that they will follow the same playbook as they have done with Shoelace (https://shoelace.style/), which did fully become Web Awesome.I'm not sure what kind of timeline we're looking at, how different "Build Awesome" is going to be from 11ty, and/or whether a viable fork might pop up that continues with 11ty more like as it currently is.Either way, regardless of what's going to happen, I myself am interested in "boring" tools that work and will continue to work, mostly as they are, for the foreseeable future (especially for SSGs), which is why I'm personally not considering 11ty as there's just a few too many questions open right now.That, and I'm honestly just a little hesitant to pick something built in JavaScript. I don't mind the language itself, having been using it well over two decades, but it's the ecosystem that just brings a lot of potential trouble with it. It's fine for some things, no doubt, but in my desire to have a boring/stable/lightweight SSG option, modern JavaScript really just can't reasonably be considered. At least not by me 😅.

@jorijn@toot.community hi! I've been using Kagi as my primary/only search engine for about a year and a half or so now? It's honestly been great. Search result quality has been very consistent for me, and much improved over when I was primarily using DuckDuckGo before it. I had to switch to Google quite often back then, to be honest.They're not the cheapest and in this modern day and age it might feel unusual to pay for search, but I like the clarity in the relationship we have, not to mention the clarity in the business model.If you can afford it, I can highly recommend it!(I'm not affiliated in any way other than being a paying customer.)

Naming things is hard 😄.I wish them all the best too, and this whole Build Awesome thing might end up making 11ty even better than many already say it is. For now, though, all we can really do is wait and see what comes of it. I do hope they'll be able to build a sustainable and reasonable business around all that they do. We all have bills to pay, and I want them to be able to do so too.For me though, I love the idea of SSGs to be as self-contained and lightweight as is reasonable. Hugo and Zola's single binary releases (ignoring the optional SASS dependency) feel like quite the powerful feature. Compare this with an always more fragile feeling than it should and near endlessly long dependency chain that a JS/Node powered project tends to bring, and you get my personal hesitance to look in that direction for something like this 😅.I hope you'll find what you're looking for. I'd love it if you could share what you end up going for once you've decided!

@jorijn@toot.community I think some (groups of) people tend to throw the baby out with the bathwater and stick with much worse options. I'm not saying there aren't potential issues around relying on Yandex, but what are we comparing it to?The recurring issue I see is that certain (groups of) people hide behind or use an excuse to not make the best-most choices by having much higher and unrealistic expectations applied to "the alternative" choice than they do the (billionaire owned, privacy invading, stealing, citizen bombing supporting, monopoly, etc.) default.The dominant search engine is Google, I'm pretty sure you already know about some of the awful stuff they've been directly contributing to.Duckduckgo is better, you might think? But they heavily depend on Bing as their primary source of search results (besides the fancy stuff they sprinkle on top, which comes from other places too), which us a Microsoft product. Long list of "Democracy" introducing adventures they've directly supported over the years, just to name one kind of fun thing they've contributed to.I totally support the idea of comnunicating directly with @kagihq@mastodon.social about the improvements we'd like to see from them, including which partnerships we'd like to see more and less of. There's always room for improvement. But I'll always recommend that we keep what we're comparing something to in mind. I like to set realistic expectations, and work from there.I obviously don't think Kagi is evil (even though I wish they'd offer a package without all that AI garbage, as I feel icky for paying for it), but if because less than 2% of their search results being provided by Yandex somehow makes them evil, I'd still continue to pay for their service, as I know the alternatives are demonstrably more evil in every way you look at it, especially when applying the same expectations to them.That's just simple math, isn't it? 😄

Had a small oopsie with my VPS today, causing its drive to fill up overnight and have several services freak out due to there not being any storage space left. Teething problems for my new consolidated setup, fortunately nothing major though.Overall my new single VPS has been running quite nicely so far. The latency is a bit of a bother at times, but not so much so that it's unusable or anything.Using mosh helps when I'm SSH'ed in for maintenance things, and on my home network I have DNS rewrites configured in Adguard so that when I access some of the services I'm hosting on this VPS, I connect to them via a Wireguard connection I have set up between the VPS and my Router, rather than directly.That doesn't help with latency, but it's often actually faster to actually send/receive data as compared to directly connecting over its public IP.

But even in my 30s, my peers never seemed to have a problem understanding and adapting to these new paradigms (...)I'd wager they didn't "understand," though you may very well be right about them having adapted alright. I think you're simply more aware than most of the limitations in understanding most (née all?) of us have when it comes to these increasingly complex tools, hard- and software both.I don't know you, and I don't know if you have any regrets in the career choices you've (not) made, but the way I see it is that being aware of one's lack of understanding of these increasingly incomprehensible tools is an asset, not a limitation.But what do I know. I'm quite possibly younger than you, but am battling with my own questions. A kind of job I loved and treasured for over 20 years is rapidly slipping away from my fingers and, in some ways, the world as we know it.And here I am, left wondering what to do with myself. I have no real practical skills to offer in anything other than this area that seems to rapidly be changing. I'm feeling kind of left behind, as many around me seem to have no problem underst— Well, adapting, anyway.😄

I tried to play a bit of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Adventure Game today, and am once again reminded of how bad I am at adventure game logic. No matter how much I like them, I just struggle to find a way to make my brain think in the "right" way. I'm sure there's a trick to it.. Is there? It might be worth considering for me to jump ahead in time a bit and "get the hang" of adventure game thinking with some more forgiving titles before coming back to this one.Speaking of Last Crusade: do you know how important reading the (physical, not in-game) journal is to be able the progress through the game? I feel a bit silly to admit this, but the handwriting used in the journal is extremely difficult to read. I'm fairly certain a doctor must've written this, my gosh 😅

If it helps in any way; I recently switched from Fedora (Silverblue, GNOME) to Debian and am using and thoroughly enjoying Niri too.Since I'm also using the unfortunately named Dank Material Shell, installation for both ended up being super simple on Debian by using Dank's installer and repositories, so I don't even have to use that other package manager thing Niri suggests for Debian, which means I also don't have to compile half the internet just to get my new favorite DE 😅.This way I get the stability and boringness (meant only in the good ways! 😄) of Debian, while I get to enjoy Niri too!Though sadly I still don't get ZFS on root this way, something Cachy will be able to give you. I really wish there was an option to have Debian with ZFS this way without having to go through super convoluted installation shenanigans. C'est la vie.Anyway, enjoy! I hope it'll work out for you. But if it doesn't or you simply miss Debian, know that using Dank's repositories is a nice way to get there too! 😄
