       @wolf480pl @nullenvk which nibble is which in the middle byte is implementation-defined, and GCC has a few targets where it's big-endian-like (including both IBM targets, POWER and S/390): https://godbolt.org/z/s1oG6ozKa

       @amonakovhmm yeah and I imagine the only reason someone would use FAT12 on those systems is to interoperate with DOS, so host-specific nibble order won't do :/ @nullenvk
