       On 386+, you could do shared objects with a different page mapping that had them in a different privilege ring, right, with a call gate.Basically make suid libraries. Did anyone do this? There were similar bits on OpenVMS but I don’t know that any commercial OS did it for libraries. It’s been a while since I futzed with the 386 at that level so maybe I’m missing something obvious (I probably am) as to why it wouldn’t work.

       @rk OS/2 used _every_ _single_ feature of 386, including call gates to switch to ring 1 for some slightly privileged hardware access.It's also why x86 emulators tend to have a hard time running OS/2.
