       i forget when or why i got the idea that "sure aws is dirt cheap but you'll be happier with a small human-run vps host"because actually aws is a shitload more expensive and you'll be happier with a small vps hosti don't even like price comparing because a small biz run by humans is intrinsically better than a giant corporation enriching a billionaire so who cares about race-to-the-bottombut if you just need that extra kick, consider how much 💸 you're wasting on aws:

       @stellarskylark oh yeah colocataires has no free tier beyond about a month of "move-in" time, if you can get free services out of the big corps without getting locked-in by inertia or their proprietary stuff i say go for itbut if you're actually giving money to those assholes and don't wanna... you can leave, hit the bricks, cops if your quick

       @stellarskylark omg cool! tangentially i am not very satisfied with cloud-init, terraform, distrobuilder, docker files, or any other virtual-machine-provisioning mechanism i've ever had to use so i've been super envious of the stuff i keep hearing about in nix and guix land for doing such things. haven't had the brain space to actually try it out yet... but somedayif you happen to blog about your experience i would love to read it, please mention on fedi!

       @pho4cexa I love Guix, I adore Guix, it is a beautiful artifact of a better world and it is not usable as a desktop operating system unless you're some kind of freak pervert whose favorite hobby is writing and updating package definitions.Nix is fine. It came first and does the same things Guix does ig and its packages stay up to date because people actually use it, but it's written in Nix instead of Guile, the development infrastructure is intractably tied to GitHub, and it depends fundamentally on systemd.Nix is the one I use as a daily driver. I wish it wasn't.
