…I wonder if the reason most commercial vibrators are mediocre is that the engineers in corporate jobs don’t want to use (or admit to using) the devices they’re designing? yet another engineering problem that’s trivially solvable by being a bit of a freak

@erin given the proliferation of IoT enabled toys with wifi and bluetooth and who knows what else, I'm shocked that one hasn't ended up on my desk at work for a "penetration" test yet.Maybe our sales folks are just too awkward to try to get into the market sector? Or the industry is too cheap to pay for security and doesn't care if your toys get taken over by a rando or start sending spam (or both)?

@azonenberg given how cheaply the >£100 wands I’ve disassembled have been on the inside, I’d imagine they just don’t care really… I’ve certainly heard about a bunch of security issues with various IoT toys

@erin like we've tested dozens of wifi security cameras before from multiple vendors.They make vibrators with cameras on them.It's a liquid tight enclosure with an embedded Linux system containing a camera, wifi chipset, and battery. And maybe a motor or two for PTZ Literally the only difference is that one has a silicone enclosure instead of hard ABS and the motors are connected slightly differently.

@erin yeah that's my leading hypothesis.But at some point the bad press from folks getting pwned justifies some expenditures to prevent it, or so I'd think

@emily @erin well to be fair i haven't actually got my hands on one to crack open and find out.But they have ones with cameras on them that stream video from your bodily orfices to a phone so i *assume* it runs Linux

@azonenberg @erin but like, how does that even workeven if you manage to find a place to put the camera that shows literally anything more than an out of focus close-up of a small patch of the user's skin, vibrators are very shaky while in use, it's kind of their whole thing

@emily @erin maybe it uses a fancy shake reduction system and encoder that times short shutter openings to when the weight is at the same position each frame?Or maybe you just have to turn off vibrations to see anything?Or maybe that's why it (according to the wired article) is now discontinued? Lol
