I wonder if a voltage regulator at the local utility was having some problems? A couple weeks ago I saw much larger than normal variation in mains voltage than I've ever seen before, both high and low, then it cleared up.

@azonenberg Maybe they were doing some maintenance?Do you have a plot of frequency for the same time period?

@0h00000000 I do but it's only like 0.1 Hz resolution so basically useless. I want higher res but the UPS internal monitoring doesn't report it so I'll need to collect the data some other way

@azonenberg @0h00000000 can it give you instantaneous voltage?

@ldcd @0h00000000 no it's averaged over a pretty long window

@azonenberg @0h00000000 even if it's very slow to do the request you could like 3rd or 4th nyquist sample it

@ldcd @0h00000000 a friend is building a tool that will do full mains waveform logging with like khz sample rates and i want one

@ldcd @0h00000000 it's good enough that like when it's windy you can see waveform distortion from arcing on loose contacts

@azonenberg @0h00000000 i've been considering getting an ACS37800 for my dad for this purpose for a while; he lives in a pretty rural area and when SoCalEdison is doing maintenence sometimes the voltage rises slowly from like 30VAC to 240 over like 30 minutes

@azonenberg @0h00000000 Has not caused any serious damage because so far he's been there and caught it when it does that and pulled the main breaker but would be good to have receipts if it does

@azonenberg @0h00000000 I have no idea how they are managing to cause that to happen though

@ldcd @0h00000000 oof lol. Yeah all my important stuff is behind the 9px6k so it doesn't care :p

@azonenberg I built this guy to measure current on 3 phases plus ground and also with a screw terminal to measure 3 phases of 480voltage with a isolated ADC. USB FS power and coms, STM32U5 MCU. 200A peak on CTs. The footprint is also compatible a with Rowgowski coil.Firmware is functional but needs some TLC. Maybe you’d be interested in helping if I sent you one. U5 has 14 bit ADCs. I have a basic static HTML page with Debian charting in Chrome with D3.JS.

@azonenberg Did you happen to have something tracking mains frequency as well? If it’s a piece of local equipment causing the problem I wouldn’t expect any frequency deviation.

@joXn Yes and no: the UPS also logs frequency but only with 0.1 Hz resolution. It'll see the frequency shift when grid power goes down and I switch to the emergency generator (much less stable, usually runs around 63 Hz and shifts around a bit) but during normal operation it's flat at 60.0 and lacks the resolution to see any shifts with load etc
