@domi Wow, what a cool history :3Interesting to learn that it all started out on a Raspberry Pi and I'm very surprised that it only moved on to a desktop/server setup in 2020. That's around the time I also moved to more "proper" hosting and shared a server with a friend. Like I would have been convinced that Sakamoto in that form would have existed for longer.Happy to also have something running on there, thank you for maintaining this really cool community project :3

@domi @hypha At least images in the blog article works.Also it's been a slightly relatable experience as I've started self-hosting on random computers in uuh 2012~2013 I think?? (I was really bad at anything like backups. Also one difference being that my dad was cool with it, after all he also hosted some bits of stuff at home, but was still general read-world escapism).

@domi Having some friends help with managing it is a blessing. That's something I'm missing for my family infra - it doesn't need _much_ maintenance, but if it's broken, there's no one to help me fix it :/

@domi Very different from hswaw/bgpwtf infra, which is *vaaastly* more complex, managed by people with limited time and attention span, and yet it works remarkably well - because if something is truly broken, there's generally ~6 people capable of fixing it and at least one of them/us will be able to jump on the problem.

@domi before I forget completely 1) how do you arrange planned downtime when other users are logged in; like reboots-for-kernel-upgrades stuff? do you just wall <<< "reboot incoming, hold on to your tmuxes" or do you have a monthly schedule?(like you have some disdain for single-user selfhosting but one reason that keeps me from actively going out and Offering Services on my own systems is that I'd have no place to tinker with things anymore and get into situations where something breaks until reboot, or a security fix needs a reboot, etc. (another reason being that all my machines are kinda /old/ lol))2) already forgot what else I was going to ask I think it was about putting literally everything on one server vs multiple lower spec servers

@grawity ad 1) it’s announced in the mattermost, on the telegram infra status channel, and usually on https://sakamoto.pl/news.htm - at least a day in advance, usually several days. When everything’s back up I post an update too.i really really need to improve the comms on this one, so either an RSS feed or something similar is in order, hosted off my infra (or “on the edge” of it) - if you have suggestions, please do let me know. I’ve been also meaning to get an uptime-kuma like page, I even wrote some software for it myself, but I never widely deployed it. This should get improved, too…re: disdain for single-user hosting; i don’t feel extremely strongly about it. it’s still better than vendor lock-in on whatever “cloud” you could be using instead. I just believe that in the current world, we should look out and support each other more.

@domi idk I guess it really depends on what kind of other comms your users already have, so as not to make them check more stuff – e.g. personally I don't love Telegram but I guess it fits the job best because you all already have it... I could host a copy of the status page next to where I have my own website tbh(I receive Treehouse updates via Discord, one faraway semi-pubnix server settled on Slack and has a backup mailing list at groups.io... the "shell account" services I started on, were all on IRC. I really need to figure out downtime announcements at work, too, and somehow replace the arcane and truly ancient LAN chat software everyone's still using)one random thought is a) having an offsite fedi account on some generic public mastodon/etc server, for infra announcements, or b) users having an offsite fedi account purely to subscribe to your regular account – since e.g. android/iOS apps support being signed in to multiple accounts, so the users will be able to see the already-federated announcement posts while donotstare is rebooting

@grawity telegram was great because we used to all have it, but nowadays i use it only for infra announcements, and so many people just aren’t on telegram. i’m struggling to find a common denominator, maybe making one central place to transmit announcements onto {webpage,telegram,irc,offsite fedi,etc} would be a good idea. need to experiment!

(although that would be a lot of "bots" to keep maintained so it's more of a joke suggestion)aside from an offsite website / offsite fedi accounts / offsite email lists service, Matrix might be one more option – still don't enjoy using it, but at least it is inoffensive in terms of signing up (like it has none of those "hey one of your contacts joined Telegram" messages) so it *could* be something to ask people to keep installed in the background, with a private channel as the "central place" (and potentially receive push alerts too[1]).yes it would be very similar to how you currently use Telegram only for infra announcements, but hopefully with a lower signup barrier for those who aren't already on itcan't think of anything else, I think that's basically all the options. (unless everyone is on a RCS group chat...)[1] (like how on my machines I can do "logger -p alert Hello" and syslog-ng feeds that into a Discord webhook, which is solely for giving me push notifications at the moment – the original plan was to implement that via matrix though)
