Being Chinese owned, Volvo is going to probably be the big mover in bringing electric to trucking and equipment.

You mean the appearance or you're familiar with their equipment?I don't drive truck or use equipment, but from what I've heard they're pretty decent machines...I have a Volvo car but that's from the pre-China years. Probably wouldn't buy a newer car from them because not repairable.

@cjd meant the cars by look. the old blocky ones are nice, but every new one seema to be a suv that would break when going slightly off road :)

Ahh yeah, their new era cars are nothing special. But Volvo is huge in the equipment space: trucks, track hoes, loaders, mining haulers, etc. And they have a pretty good reputation AFAIK.I think their Chinese owners are going to push them to electrify, because China has the best battery industry in the world and the oil trade is controlled by the US.It's a real challenging problem because these machines use *insane* amounts of energy per day - but it's also a big opportunity because the diesel bills for these companies are pretty annoying, so if Volvo can roll out a solution that goes the whole day, companies are going to buy that up...

John Deere is also trying it with tractors. For many, the plug it in overnight model doesn't work. The machines operate night and day in places where there's no where to charge. While electric cars are known for high torque, they only operate under heavy load for brief periods and derive much of their advantages over fuel from regen braking and more efficient operation at low loads. Heavy equipment runs loaded for extended periods, causing cooling issues for batteries and motors. Diesel operated under steady loads can be pretty efficient, reducing much of the potential advantage.

For tractors this is an insanely hard problem. A track hoe digging dirt all day might be pulling an average of 50hp, when it's pulling up a shovel it's 200hp and when it's just swinging and dumping it's 20hp...But modern tractors have like 1000hp engines and when you're seeding with an 80 foot drill, you can be sitting there using 800hp continuously. And you convert that to kilowatts and then compute battery size and you quickly see you have a big problem...
