       #Gentoo is still one of the bright outposts in #FLOSS where human work is valued and #LLM contributions are banned. However, sometimes I feel that this matters very little.After all, Gentoo is a distribution. While it has its own value, it cannot exist without all the software it is shipping. It makes no sense in isolation.And let's be honest, I don't think you can avoid slop today. We are trying our best to sieve out the worst: the copywashing chardet, the vibecoded NIH Perl crypto packages… but it's just that.As someone who bumps Python packages, let me tell you this: LLMs are omnipresent. I notice Claude in commit logs, I notice the blasphemy of agent instructions all over the place… and there's probably much more than I don't notice. With many core components giving in, you can't avoid it without literally freezing on old, vulnerable versions, or spending hours looking for alternatives or creating them.FLOSS is dead. People don't care. They don't have conscience. All they care about is the sick idea of "productivity", i.e. generating more slop.The few of us who do care can do very little. We will continue doing our best until they kill us (as they're literally slowly killing the whole humankind). But that's it. Maybe it will pass once the bubble pops, maybe it won't. Either way, the damage is beyond repair. We will never be able to trust one another like we did. We will never again be a community building a better world.It's just like everything nowadays. It's hard to find a good washing machine (one that will actually be repairable), good shoes (that won't fall apart shortly after the warranty expires), good food. You need lots of money, and even then you have to sieve through all the scammers who just sell the same shit with higher profit margin. #OpenSource is just another branch of business where people are trying to "sell" you shit, and don't care anymore if it explodes in your face.        @mgorny I quite feel like it's because we didn't establish much trust in the first place, like distros would also just grab whatever is out there which somewhat satisfies the licences and doesn't immediately looks too ugly, and sadly that's a bit "Free as in the sofa sitting on the street marked 'free'".And part of me still wants to believe that we can recover from that, another part feels like it's too late because computers and surrounded requirements got too complex, like we can't just go grab one of those full-hobbyist OS anymore and hope to daily-drive it without having to import whole chunks of code that's now very likely tainted.

       @mgorny i understand why you would think it's a lost cause, the odds are definitely stacked against us. however, that is part of the strategy employed, to make this technology seem inevitable, to make adoption as fast as possible and in that way crush all resistance. it's very much a blitzkrieg on humanityi believe this is because they fear us getting together and making a stand against it, there are way more of us than there are of them and we can make a stand against the dehumanization machinethis is even more true if we band together with other affected professions, like writers, artists, translators, etc. we need to have a unified front against this abusive technology. and i am sure we can do this if we find one-another and band together in solidarity. listen to one-anothers problems and make genuine bonds and communitiesthere was a time when the fight against proprietary software seemed this dire. but we banded together and created free software projects, slowly taking over the world. i'm not saying the situation here is perfect: free software did get co-opted a lot by corporations and rebranded into "open source", it is a bittersweet victory to some extent, but no-one is going to say free software is nichemuch the same can be said about codes of conduct in projects, many projects now go against toxic behaviors and try to be inclusive. is this all projects? definitely not. but there are manywhat i think the best way forward is here is to band together, create many overlapping communities against it, create (and fork) free software projects and support other professions in solidarity (and receive their support in return)we need to make our own free software movement, where "free" is interpreted in a much more holistic way: free of any hierarchies and against all oppressionso, do not lose hope, we have not nearly lost the fight. it is exactly their strategy to make it seem hopeless. have a lot of projects accepted slop? yes. will we have to begrudgingly use slop projects in the near term? also yes. but we are at the starting point of forming a movement against itwe can and will create ethical, holistic alternativesalso, check out noai.starlightnet.work for a list of projects with stances against slop. try to support them, if you can. if you know others, add them. if you're able, get involved!we're in this together, and together we are strong ✊ ​:neocat_heart:​

       @mgorny I see this a lot too, and it is indeed very overwhelming. But I don't think "it is over".I believe many people in FOSS are not here for ideological reasons (the sharing of knowledge and solutions, the community) but either as a job or a tool (for example to get a job).But it is hard (impossible?) to tell the difference from the outside so it looks like so many people are abandoning their beliefs but I don't think that is accurate.This means those of us that refuse LLMs (in FOSS or anywhere) are a reminder that those values do exist, and when they do they are strong and healthy.I think LLMs will largely pass (but not disappear) and so our refusal actions are important, no matter how small.Aside from the practical reasons (preserving skills and knowledge) we can show other people that "no LLMs thanks" is an option and we can remind them why.We can show people there are alternatives, especially younger people just starting to explore software communities.I know this is a lot of hope and guessing, but I hope it can bring some comfort in times you need it.At the very least you are not alone.

       @mgorny if it helps, I really appreciate all the work of the gentoo devs and maintainers. I donate + corporate match every month which is more monthly than I've ever spent on any other operating system because I see the value and I understand the hard work that goes in to keeping Gentoo going.
