       @mia @shibao I don't think the barrier to normies using irc is the ui anymore I think it's that they don't want to make choices or learn things (like what's a server, which one am I suppose to join, do I need this port option, etc).I think you can get them to download app, enter phone or email, and click a link (or scan a QR code). That's about it.

       @mia @shibao Bluesky had moderate success with the "twitter sucks we're doing our own thing" messaging. My mother in law is on there, anyway. But they heavily compromised on federation to do it, and I think any mainstream app would probably need to do the same.I think a discord clone with an atproto backend (or even just sign-in) would do pretty well.
