       I often think of the free software definition as kind of post-scarcity philosophical definition of property rights. Kind of in the tradition of other philosophical definitions of property, labor and value; but in a digital world where there is no resource scarcity.From that point of view, the free software definition can be seen as the minimum prerequisites one needs to have in order for a recipient to truly own or possess a piece of software as property.The problem is of course, while this is important foundational work. However, property rights are not the only ethical dimension of software. The FSF sometimes acknowledges this, which is why their work sometimes dips it's toes occasionally in other directions.        (multipart, continued 2/2)However, I do think it is fair to say that the FSF for better and worse is most narrowly focused on that one primary property-rights aspect; as the chief concern.AND im not saying thats wrong per se. They are a single organization. However having the chief authority of the community so narrowly focused; in a community that has few other recognized and agreed upon moral authorities, has shaped things historically.AND with only the property rights dimension "nailed down" it has left everything feeling a bit like the modern american libertarian party; by default.Which as a default state for so much of the community, is increasingly unappetizing if not regarded as morally irresponsible by many.  #fsf #ethics #morality #philosophy #freesoftware
