       I am so angry and disappointed at all the left- and center-wing commentators who bought into the right-wing framing of "parent's rights" as being more important than children's rights.Like, I'm sorry, but parents have *responsibilities to* kids, not *rights over* kids. Kids aren't property, they're living, breathing *people* who deserve care and love and privacy and dignity.

       That shit has done so much harm even here in Washington... a nominally and normally blue state adopted a law that forcibly outs queer kids in schools because of "parent's rights." No mention in the entire law of the fact that kids have their own rights, and that those rights include not being subjected to queerphobic violence at the hands of the state.

       (As an aside, I'm calling it "age verification" to reference media coverage, but even that is a pernicious disnomer. It's a requirement that identity be registered with a centralized agency, and that that centralized agency is a trusted attestor as to age. To wit, note how the iOS update to follow UK age verification laws mandates that users register their identities with US companies like credit card providers.)
