Getting marketing spam from airlines is the weirdest thing ever. Like are there people who get an email from Delta and just go "oh I think I'll book a flight to Paris for next week for no reason"??If I fly somewhere it's because I have a reason to be there, usually because I am speaking at a conference or am visiting a customer. Nothing the airline spams me with will magically conjure up a presentation or client.

@azonenberg Advertising Kerps the brand name in your head, so when you do fly you choose them because it is familiar. Also costs them nothing to do.

@SuperMoosie I choose delta given the choice for reasons that have nothing to do with advertising:* Seattle is a major hub for them so I can get direct flights to many major cities* Their points don't expire and i have a bunch of them* My neurospicy palate likes one of their in-flight snack boxes in particular compared to a lot of the alternativesI also always pick a window seat on the north facing side of the aircraft (assuming a broadly east-west oriented flight which is typical for me) to avoid overheating or sun in my face but still have a view or a bulkhead I can lean against to nap.All of these choices are predetermined long before the flight is booked or I even know where I'm going.

@SuperMoosie (points expiration is a major consideration because I don't fly that often so it might take me ~5 years to get enough points that I can book a cheap/free flight to visit family on the east coast, and I get points from work travel that I can use for personal stuff... if they get spread across a dozen airlines I'll either retire before I have enough for a free flight from any one, or they'll expire at the end of the year and I get nothing)

@SuperMoosie The hub issue meant the choice was down to Delta or Alaska.I like Delta's food better and Alaska runs mostly 737 max's these days so it's an easy choice.

@azonenberg @SuperMoosie you aren’t the target of the spam. The top-of-mind advertising has been going on as long as advertising. For work in the 90s I did a lot with some [Australian] “big box” retailers. Some that I’d visit, deliberately ran spammy TV/Print campaigns of super cheap offers for things most people wouldn’t buy.!What I was told by one of their franchisees:A) it showed diversity in their range. B) showed how “crazy CrAzy CrAZy!” Their prices could getC) often advertised a below-cost product, with niche demand but high visibility or well known brand (so loss-lead adverts would have limited uptake and the hit from losses would be minimal)D) kept A, B and the affiliation with the brand form C, “top of mind” (for when the customer did want a product). It worked. I visited many stores in my time and I’d hear customers mention advertised product families. “We heard there was a sale on [odd product], is [my product] on sale too? Oh, it’s not, but you’ll ‘see what you can do’? Gee thanks!!!”The goal wasn’t to sell the crazy offered product. It was to keep the customers aware that crazy crazy prices and weird and wonderful products are a regular occurrence at these stores. “May as well come in and see what else we have going on”. Ahh.. the good old days where psychology and manipulation wasn’t too targeted and A/B testing was largely “how many people did we reach?” —Edits: wow. Full of typos. suasttalian?!?! What even is that ???

@azonenberg They should target it with conference registrations. "We see you are presenting at xyz conference. We'll upgrade you to business class and maybe you can mention us during your talk..."
