I sometimes wonder how my parents or my siblings perceive things in the US, especially as it regards trans people. They checked out of the family politics chat a long time ago. I gave up on talking about US news with them. Do they even know? Do they think it's fine and largely unchanged? Do they have any awareness of the steady, relentless, and terrifying march of oppression? If they did, would they care? They didn't care when I told them about it a year ago or 2 years ago. What would make them care now? Or are they just annoyed I don't visit?Kinda not my problem but also kinda very much my problem. I care. I want them to care. I just stopped talking to them about it because they don't seem to care and I couldn't afford to take the emotional hit of that reality on a regular basis. So I just sit and wonder.

@faithisleaping Mine neither knew nor cared. And still don't.Like, my mum had no idea it was illegal to be trans in russia. Nor did she knew any of the common transphobic talking points. Until she "did some research" of reading a couple of articles online, that is.She still hopes that i'll come back one day, and thinks it's not that bad over there.

@theartlav @faithisleaping and my wife's parents do know it's illegal to be trans or gay in Russia and think it should be more illegal. And still hope that wife will come back one day 🤡

@faithisleaping Funny enough, I got a glimpse into it this morning myself. I haven't talked to my dad in over a year. But this morning I met with my financial advisor, who's a cishet white man, maybe a few years younger than my dad. I always assumed he was somewhere along the "centrist" line of things, but this conversation confirmed it. And the answer is: no, they don't know. They don't see the laws that are being passed. They don't hear the rhetoric. It doesn't hit their news or their circles. And if it does, it's downplayed and they don't know the severity of it. They think it will just blow over and that the "needle swung too far for us."People who didn't believe our fears before don't believe them now either.

@CordiallyChloe @faithisleaping I’ve been astounded by people call themselves allies don’t realize how bad it’s gotten in the last year even. One of my neighbors first said hi to us because she liked my “protect trans kids” sign, and supports us and trans rights. But when we chat while our dogs play together, she’s always surprised when I tell her about the big anti-trans laws being passed and things like that. It’s so frustrating, mainstream media will front page people constantly talking about how dangerous and horrible and bad we are, but will barely report what is being done to us. So unless people are actively putting in time to follow news on a minority they may have little direct connection with, they don’t hear about it. Similar to how few white folks kept up with the specifics of anti-immigrant laws, policies, and actions until it was visible in their neighborhoods.
