       @thomholwerda most programmers do not like programming.Most programmers and IT workers are very bad at their jobs because of that. They don't like their jobs.We got loads of people into computers because it made a decent wage, and we encouraged loads of people who got fired to retrain as programmers.That's not a value judgement against the people in question.But that's, I think, why. There's not that many people who code for the love of it.

       @hp @thomholwerda Just the other day I was comparing how much fun we had programming in the 1980s with how mind-numbingly tedious was the programming job I've just retired from.

       @hp @thomholwerda I grew up in a world where most couldn’t care less about computers but the few that were into it were so passionate it simply had never occurred to me coding could be “just a day job”.I am now 51. It really came as a shock to me when I first met, notably younger, people who just did programming as a job, as one could be an insurance salesmen or anything because it paid decently. To me it sounded like “oh yes, I write songs but it’s my day job, I am not that much into music otherwise”.I think both worlds can coexist in parallel though. Some will use any tool the job imposes on them to get it done and go back home, others will try to have fun selectively learning new things.
