       @JessTheUnstill Oh, it's even worse, since in a lot of cases if you're cash-pay they give you a discount and while it's more than you'd pay if you had insurance it's less than the copay+insurance charge, because the various providers generally know the system is godawful horrible and try to do *something* for folks with less cash or access to insurance.

       @wordshaper Insurance has become akin to a criminal enterprise, co-opting politicians to keep it in place much like drug cartels co-opt them to keep drugs illegal. My last dental bill was covered by insurance, had I paid cash the dentist would have knocked off $200 for a cash & senior discount but the insurance company would not have paid their share. So I saved less than two months premium on the bill even though insurance covered a portion of the total. Had to pay my part up front, and then wait while insurance company paid a THIRD PARTY that sends the money out to the dentist. He gets paid in a credit voucher he can’t cash, so it takes an extra month for a paper check to be issued. It’s three months now and the dentist is paid and I’m still waiting on the accountant to send me the amount that I had to pay upfront to get the care in the first place. @JessTheUnstill

       @CivilityFan @wordshaper @JessTheUnstill about 15 years ago my dentist explained in detail how the insurance market works, and differs from the medical insurance market, at which point I resolved to never purchase dental insurance.

       @JessTheUnstill @oddhack @CivilityFan @wordshaper and here in Germany one can just pay 40 EUR/month for a supplementary dental insurance covering basically everything, and go to regular dentists who charge regular prices (reduced by an amount a statutory health insurance covers), and then get the entire payment reimbursed by the supplementary insurance company.Or, if you don't have a supplementary dental insurance, you pay the same amount but don't get reimbursed. For dentists it doesn't matter at all.
