       Young man who worked for me gave me a bottle of wine once, after I bought him a lifetime subscription to Rosetta Stone out of pocket, when corporate wouldn't. Nice note about how he'd never had a better mentor, which is probably true, because I get that one a lot.I worked in corporate America, building large systems, over forty years.

       I've got close friends out of my business life, who I've gone to war with. Great people, people I'd trust to have my back in any fight, corporate or real world. Those are people I'd look out for, even without business on the line.The truth is as a leader (and this is almost as true with your superiors) you can only get out of people what they see you give. Good leaders will give first, because everyone's inured to the bullshit the corporate cheerleaders spout -- everyone knows it's lies.

       The "company" is an immortal organism that doesn't give a shit about you and will use you as cheaply as you let it.Only people can be trusted -- and not most of them. Trust is rare and hard to earn, and should be. The number of people you can *really* trust to look out for you when it's even slightly injurious to their interests is small, not because people are bad, but because the impact of misplaced trust can be career threatening.Anyone trusting an immortal legal construct is a damn fool.
