Some rather amusing coincidence in Mandarin and Russian.The name of the city Ryazan (Рязань, pronounced roughly "ri-ZAN"), a name historically connected to the medieval Principality of Ryazan, an offshoot of the Kyivan Rus'. The English name comes from the conventional romanisation of the Russian.But in Mandarin the name appears as 梁贊 梁赞 (liángzàn) -- notice the nasal -ng- /ŋ/ inserted into it. Why?A plausible explanation is that there are too few words in Mandarin that could match the first, "rya-" syllable without modification. However, there's something more interesting.The older forms of Ryazan', as appeared in the 15th-century Ipatiev (Hypatian) Chronicle, included the variants such as Рѧзань (notice the old "small yus" Ѧ letter) - "к Рѧзаню по Ѡльзѣ" (to Ręzanĭ after Olĭza - misspelling for Olĭga/Olga). Coincidence? Most likely. However, it would be interesting to investigate pre-modern Mandarin sources, such as Tulišen's Travels (18th century), which mentioned place names such as Saratov and Moscow, for early appearances of the Chinese phonetic rendering.

And I'm pretty good at it.I used to translate for the New York Times. Is there an alternative to Microsoft 365 cloud subscription, if I need full .docx file-format support? The subscription plan looks very sus and scammy, and according to MS the standalone application costs $159.99, which is exorbitant for a one-person small business, and I fear that MS can still remotely disable it for any reason any time.In your experience, is there an alternative 3rd-party application that supports the .docx file directly? Here's a thought.. Many of us are looking for work and would really like to get #FediHired.But what if we band together and create our self-owned initiative, and create these jobs for ourselves, and probably for others as well?There *will* be obstacles and, obviously, risks. There's a long way to go from an idea and its implementation, not to say a successful one.But secretly I suspect that many would have longed for something in this general direction.Do these longings inform us of anything? And what are the action potentials?

I am really, really sad because I’m trapped in a situation where family would nudge and push me into jobs that they love but would mean 100% spiritual death for me. (Can’t go into too much details but think about being a cop or prison guard, and worse.) I’ve already been having hard enough time surviving under the weight of mental health problems, disability, and the unsafe conditions for people like me. Even if I understand the very legitimate interests in me having a job and money (which I share), I cannot foresee any good thing that would come out of it. And I don’t think I can convey this to them, that there are certain things that I’d rather die than do, if not for the love and obligations toward them (or maybe there is one way but it’s so difficult it would cost so much energy to me).I don’t think I deserve being put under this terrible bind, but no one around seems to understand how horrible it is for me.
