@stfn looks like you've done already exactly what I'm looking at implementing right now. Hopefully a quick simple question: still a happy (enough) PhotoPrism user and confident in the choice of it over Immich?I'm trying to decide which of them to try first.

@stfn Thanks, interesting! "On paper" I was leaning towards Immich, but haven't tried either yet. Just got the NAS box set up, photo software is the next step and I have a could of hundred GB of not well organised stuff downloaded from Google, and a similar amount of pre-Google more organised stuff in a directory structure.

@stfn I've got some non-fancy* ones lying around, so that's doable — I'm very much not familar with the whole GPU/ML world so I've no idea how useful a given model/vintage of GPU is for this purpose (my very dusty practical ML knowledge is about 2000 vintage).Another thing to research :) * Having never been a "gamer" my GPU needs have always been modest.

Fuck me mastodon generates a tonne of syslog spam. Also: the full content of toots is showing up in my syslog in massive WARN messages with respect to comms with other fedi instances. My daily syslog is half a gig, it's mostly mastodon.WTF is this junk.I need to migrate to less garbage software.

GoToSocial appeals to me the most as an alternative off the bat, mainly as it is implemented in Go rather than some utter junk like rails/node lol.I'm afraid the MissKey website automatically turns me off given I'm not otaku pedo... bad vibes. Also TypeScript is just silly.Takahē is compelling given the very first text I see on their site is "An efficient ActivityPub Server, for small installs with multiple domain". It's python/django which I have misgivings about but don't hate.

@jase @stevelord @grunfink that's several recommendations for it!I'll look into how to migrate soon, because this Mastodon mess is doing my head in.

@stfn PoE hat! I didn't know that existed. Had no idea a PoE hat that can take power from the existing ethernet port was possible. That's cool.I've often vaguely wondered why they don't do a pi that can be PoE powered, but figure it is possibly too niche and not worth the BOM addition in the general case. But I see a PoE hat is an official thing so I guess they actually thought of that already and I've just not been paying attention.

@chewie @stfn must be some heat dissipation from stepping down the voltage, PoE voltages are fairly high compared to RPi needs. I have PoE+ switches so definitely something I'll be looking into if I do more pi stuff.

@stfn a neat explanation I think.I've seen the term "Dependency Injection" loads since coming back to looking at modern (as in more modern than 10 years ago) programming and frameworks. As a concept I have grasp on it, but the terminology itself was new to me - your post boils down the point nicely against the Python example in ways that are a bit buried in, say, the Wikipedia article.I'm curious as to the etymology of "Dependency Injection" as a design pattern. It was clearly a term in use when I was working as a software engineer, but I don't recall it. I notice the Wikipedia Page was first created in 2005, and cites Java/Spring and RoR as examples. Given I was a C/C++ systems/networking coder I guess it's not surprising if the concept was mainly in web framework circles.I'm familiar with the idea of using "interfaces" in this and similar ways going way back, I guess without knowing this term I'd have just described it as a property and key point of "abstraction".

@stfn I find this interesting: https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=Dependency+injection%2CInversion+of+Control&year_start=1800&year_end=2022&corpus=en&smoothing=3I actually recall the term Inversion of Control (though I wouldn't have without having seen it on Wikipedia!) and this would follow given it's usage peak is more around my Uni and subsequent dev career times. [Edit: to note there is a difference between the original usage of this and how it was used in ways that link to DI.]Anyway, thanks, I found the post useful in my current quest to get up to date with the world. 😅 (Hm, is there any non-Google equivalent to their n-gram viewer...)

@stfn lol.As in I do find myself saying lol out loud, as a single syllable word ("lol" as opposed to "ell oh ell"). Usually nobody is lol-ing, and I'm saying it in response to some bad joke, sort of a sarcastic lol.

What is this weed? Dug out of a Norfolk UK allotment bed.We saw these little fuzzy leaves poking out of the ground in the middle of our asparagus bed. I dug around them trying to get as much out as possible and my little trowel hit something that went crunch... I dug out this large root/rhizome/tuber... clearly not all of it either. It's huge!I've no idea what this is.#GrowYourOwn #Weed #allotment #GYO

Managed to get some stuff done down the #allotment... it isn't panning out as the mega-productive long-weekend I'd hoped for down there... but there are still two more days!!We got some planting done. And now our current outdoor beds are full. We need to get more beds sorted soon. That's mutisown beetroot, onions, and spring onions in - plus chards, cabbages and lettuces. The polytunnel is a jungle... but we'll just let it do its thing, harvest as we need, and clear it when it's time to put the tomatoes, chillies, etc, in (which will be circa 2nd week of May.)Got the greenhouse base fully secured and started trenching one side for plastic lining (because creosotey sleepers) but the plastic we had was short so I'm going to check if we have longer plastic in storage before using the short stuff.Harvested some mustard greens to go with tonight's dinner of gumbo and mashed potato.

So much to do on the #allotment it's hard to know what to prioritise. Really must get all the cucurbit seeds in this weekend - zucchinis, pumpkins, and cucumbers. Also sweetcorn! The tomatoes, eggplants, and capsicums should have been potted on a week or two ago and it's getting so close to planting out I wonder if I should bother (but yes, I really should... first job tomorrow perhaps, I'm a bit bushed for today, and it's nearly 8pm after all!)On the plot we need to get this greenhouse done, our growing plans for the chillies and melons really require that greenhouse. And when that is done we can spread and move woodchip to the back of the plot clearing the front of the plot for putting in the planned low raised beds which will be a lot of our required outdoor growing space for zucchinis, pumpkins, sweetcorn, beans, and more.At some point we need to do that front fence and gates, and the back fence, but they feel less like priorities right now.

Well, was one of the more unpleasant #allotment trips in a while. No shelter from the wind in these flatlands. Hated it, but just want this greenhouse done. Was too late a start really, but got a bunch of stuff done at home... so not a useless day, was just reluctant to venture outside. It has gone all winter again.Got all the rubber strip in place on the frame and then got a start at putting the poly and glass in. I don't like the poly at all and wonder if I have enough glass to fully replace it. The poly has been retrofitted to replace glass and doesn't really fit properly because it is thicker than greenhouse glass, it doesn't slot into the slots per se... probably just have to live with that. Cannot complain too much about a free greenhouse.Kat got some more woodchip down whilst I swore at the cold and the greenhouse.

@nina_kali_nina heh... I'm feeling increasingly weirdo lately (except here on Fedi, but here we're all the weirdo I guess 😂)... everyone keeps extolling the virtues of this tech, seemingly sane people are pointing at relatively bad code and saying: "Look at this amazing productivity!" I look at it and what I see is bugs and technical debt. (I also write bugs and technical debt of course, but I'd like to think slightly less glaringly, horribly, so on both fronts...)Right now it seems most(?) coders are so over-awed by how quickly GenAI can churn out code that they don't really stop to think beyond the very short term. When questioned about issues of quality they often defensively say: but it's going to get better! Eh, I'll believe that when I see it... maybe it will, maybe it won't... I remain unconvinced. I try to maintain an open mind... albeit with a very sceptical filter.

.... and home, 18 hours later. Long old day. Kew was pretty awesome though. Don't think we really saw more than about a third of it, but we saw most of the indoor spaces. The Princess of Wales conservatory alone was a good three hours worth.Anyway, better sleep, back to the office tomorrow!

Last day with mum in the UK, her and other family now at Heathrow... and flying back to Western Australia tomorrow. Amused that on mum's last day in the UK we went and looked at Western Australian plants in London 🤣 (but also much much else bedsides, and I have SO MANY photos.)Drive back was a bit of an arse, made less bad by the later evening traffic. They had somehow conspired to close *both* the A1 and the M1. 🤪
