New blog post! This time I'm talking about my Raspberry Pi cluster, and there's a bit of everything, Kubernetes, Ansible, BOINC, all that magic.https://stfn.pl/blog/56-kubernetes-boinc-raspberry-pi-cluster/#blog #RaspberryPi #kubernetes #k3s #Ansible #boinc

@stfn BOINC on a Pi? Interesting.

@stfn PoE hat! I didn't know that existed. Had no idea a PoE hat that can take power from the existing ethernet port was possible. That's cool.I've often vaguely wondered why they don't do a pi that can be PoE powered, but figure it is possibly too niche and not worth the BOM addition in the general case. But I see a PoE hat is an official thing so I guess they actually thought of that already and I've just not been paying attention.

@stfn PoE is very cool considering each Pi needs a new supply. Is PoE cheaper?

@peterrenshaw It's complicated. You only need a single PoE switch to power 5-8 Pis, but you need to buy a PoE HAT for each one. All in all it will be more extensive than buying a power supply for every Pi, but PoE has other advantages like longer range

@yvan Yep, I have the same thoughts. PoE is cool but too niche to be added to every Pi.

@stfnIf you want to do this the cheap way, nothing beats wiring up an old power supply to the gpi pins.If you're slightly more prudent, you could solder usb connectors to 5v wires of the power supply. The latter approach worked fine for me.

@erijpkema oh right, I forgot you can power the Pis straight from the GPIO pins.I think I'll stay with PoE, I like how versatile it is, especially when it comes to the possible length of the cabling

@stfn poe is a bit more expensive but it looks a lot better.

@yvan @stfn There are a few different ones. One i've seen has a little OLED screen on it too :)I've got 3 Pis with PoE hats and they seem pretty reliable. The only thing is they have fans on and do seem to get a little warm for some reason, so you may need more airflow in your your case than normal.

@chewie @stfn must be some heat dissipation from stepping down the voltage, PoE voltages are fairly high compared to RPi needs. I have PoE+ switches so definitely something I'll be looking into if I do more pi stuff.

@yvan @stfn Yeah, although it's from 48V down to USB voltages, so should be fairly efficient.PoE is great.I've got a few CCTV cameras, Wireless APs, some small switches, and a couple of PoE to USB converters, which means a lot fewer cables :)I would like to find some PoE lighting, and people keep going on about it for office buildings, but i've yet to see any products, which is annoying.

@chewie @yvan ha, I also had the thought of PoE lighting, that would be awesome. More things should be PoE!

@chewie @yvan I wish there was a PoE to Lenovo square adapter, I have a Lenovo m625q, which should be within the specs of PoE, but instead has a bulky 220V power adapter

@stfn There's this: https://www.slimq.uk/products/usb-c-to-dc-adapter-to-lenovo-slim-tipNo idea if it is any good, or if 65W would be enough. Then there's this:https://shop.poetexas.com/products/bt-usbc-a-pdI bought one, but not actually used it yet.I hope it's good, it wasn't cheap.Hopefully I will get to use it with my laptop in the garden in summer when it's nice and warm 😀

@chewie I'm already using that USB-C to Lenovo for my X240 :DAnd that second thing looks very cool, but the price, it's around 5 times the price of that tiny pc 😅

@stfn Ah, can't that work with your m625q too?Yes, it is a bit excessive for what it is.I don't see how "education" can afford that for every student 😞Maybe schools in Texas are loaded 😝

@chewie Actually... I could buy another one of those, and a small USB-C wall wart, and that would save me a lot of space, thanks!
