Windows infects itself with every telemetry ever and AI junk that's just surveillance wrapped in a buzzword.Meanwhile, in Linux land, we can't keep our sound settings intact across reboots without writing some janky systemd unit to force the default output to where we want itI'll still use Linux over Windows, though, but we need to FIX this shit

@izaya I know some wise guy's going to try satisfying this with one being wi-fiWhat part of "ethernet" are they missing? This should especially be doable given the fact that I have a small machine that has two ethernets and THREE full-size HDMIs

And oh... another important metric. Anything less means I have a misconfiguration, leak, or other bustedness

Oh dear... so the ThermalTake DUT is constantly powering off/powering on after the mainboard stops at POST code 55.So I look that up, and there's a post about the Z77 Extreme4 doing that and it being RAM-related. So I swap the RAM. It does the same thing.I pull all RAM. It stops powering off and stops at POST code 53 (which probably means "NO RAM"). That's my good old Antec EarthWats 650 PSU cleared of any faults...I wonder if the CPU has the memory controller, and that's the fault...

POST code 55 means "RAM not installed", so there's most likely a RAM channel fault caused by CPU socket pins not connecting properly

So I took the CPU out and looked at the socket, and there were a couple of pins that looked dodgy (these things are ridiculously SMALL; couldn't tell if there was a pin there or if it was no-connect, but there WAS a pin there)Took a Pentel P205 and put that pointy bit used to clear lead jams out into there, and wiggled those two pins to where they looked reasonable, and put everything back togetherAnd holy SHIT it POSTs now! Stupid fragile socket design (LGA1155)

@foone I recently had to reinstall all my After Dark for Windows screensaversAD 2.0, Star Trek, More AD, AD 3.0, and The SimpsonsThose early ones can't be installed off a CD-ROM unless you make a specific directory tree for the files. Crufty installers...I also installed the Intermission screensavers I have. At least Delrina's installer is more well-behaved... (and I get Dancing Pig!)

@foone jwz isn't even interested in making a Wayland version of xscreensaver (after over 30 years of dealing with X, I don't blame him a bit)

@foone ha, that's closer to the truth than people want to admit! All I could dig up on Wayland screensaver support is that they're not officially supported, and a lot of people still WANT screensavers, and of course the relevant flame threads

From jwz's recent dealings with Patreon. He was talking about how Patreon puts a "Save membership card" link into a thing that patrons get physically mailed and need to present at the door, but this little extra nugget nails a thing that's wrong with app stores today...When both creators and END users don't want your app, you done goofed.

@foone it should give time breakdowns depending on ISA, and if the ISA is "x86", it should further break it down real-mode vs. protected mode.

My collection of PCMCIA and Cardbus cardsThat Xircom one was awesome in its day. It took up the whole PCMCIA bay, but you got fast ethernet AND a dialup modem, with no dongles needed!(too bad for that JAZ SCSI host adapter; I don't have the dongle anymore :o( )

So Wayland has X11 compatibility in the form of "XWayland"What's stopping someone from creating a "GDIWayland" compatibility layer so you can display, say, Program Manager from Windows 3.1?Of course, I've fallen into "just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should" territory ;o)
