@gert @aral Oh I dunno, GitHub was *proprietary* all along, brazen hypocrisy — we build a front-end and community around FLO software development, and no, of course our software isn't FLO.https://tom.preston-werner.com/2011/11/22/open-source-everything.html and Tom's anti-GPL screed and other antagonistic ideas were around the whole time.Anyone who felt "sold out" when MS bought it was delusional to start with.

@strypey "FLO" is not about fudging them together, and everything around how I and others use "FLO" is free of the problems that come with "FLOSS" because FLOSS is a thing, refers to software under certain licenses. FLO is the qualities that matter including the ethics, and openness is one of those qualities.https://wiki.snowdrift.coop/about/free-libre-open@BillySmith @witchescauldron

@popey does "store" here imply exclusive non-FLO licensing? Or *pretending* that FLO software is not FLO for the sake of encouraging binary-download sales? Or is the intention to be transparent about financial support for the FLO software maintenance and distribution?

@popey good intentions aren't in doubt, the question is whether the well-intended people understand and value software freedom (and not just open source upstream development as a technical process).

@CoralineAda I asked the anecdote-led confusing question at the end of your excellent #FOSSY2023 talk on #opensocialcompactI thought of simpler way to ask it:Most people are accustomed to retributive justice and thus constrict defensively when any of their conduct gets flagged. How can we acclimate people to #restorativejustice such that they can keep a more collaborative, appreciative mindset when complaints about their conduct arise? If that's not clearer, I'll think of another wording…

@taylan I wish Mastodon more easily allowed me to switch your reply to private to then clarify our mix of shared-views / misunderstandings / differences without the tension of public engagement. It's just so easy for people to react constrictively to contentious public discussion.I'll do my best to address your immediate points, and maybe further clarification can be private. I imagine you feel constricted about my asking Coraline a question, you might think I'm more deferential than I am…

@taylan I hesitated to make the question public, but seemed innocuous enough.I had/have some skepticism about OpenSocialCompact and do not defer to or use the Contributor Covenant. I found Coraline's presentation far better than expected and demonstrating humility, curiosity, careful thought, good intentions, and some intriguing ideas. My question is sincere about RJ, and I'm doubtful Coraline has a good answer, but if she does, I hope to hear it.I'm interested in ideas over ad hominem…

@taylan you said> the Contributor Covenant is explicitly anti-feministIdeas some see as anti-feminist doesn't make "explicit". "Explicit" would be an actual statement of opposition to feminism.> this person is considered a champion of justiceI might share more of your concern than you guess> appoint themselves the unelected figurehead of "progress"…In this case, Coraline at FOSSY (progressive community conference, not corporate) was just yet another speaker, no particular authority…

The #LLM, "AI" stuff is doing the same process as people do when we adapt and improve things in a free/libre/open (FLO) fashion.Provocative take: the *key* feature in #AI progress today is its *ignoring* of copyright limitations (because copyright hampers creativity, and ignoring it allows new valuable syntheses of ideas).(dangers are another matter, but point is human-driven #FLO creativity could also be freed from copyright, we just need *different* laws for the problems this brings up)

@photoncollector @strypey If slaves had some minimal freedom to vote for which slavemaster they work under, pointing out that they are still slaves doesn't erase the difference between one slavemaster who cares about keeping them relatively healthy and another slavemaster who is a sadistic abuser. And the slaves could still have their preferences without any illusions about the injustice of the whole situation. And better to be healthy if you're going to fight for real freedom later anyway

@photoncollector @strypey I don't disagree with any of that, and awareness of big context is, in general, worth keeping in mind.I just think it's ironically *similarly* narrow-minded *either* to be (A) lost in the little details of the system without questioning the whole thing *or* (B) ignoring all the little details and blurring everything together just because the whole system is corrupt.Healthy understanding admits seeing *multiple* perspectives and scales.

@photoncollector @strypey It's possible and healthy enough to BOTH care about all the political differences *within* a system that lead to meaningfully different outcomes and more or less suffering and harms AND to do so while *fully* aware of the big context. So, when you see any individual discussing particular details within the system, don't make assumptions about whether they are or aren't aware of the overall context or are or aren't doing anything broader.

@photoncollector @strypey As an example of details: Lina Khan as FTC chair under Biden did more for true public good and holding the oligarchs to account than any other political figure in 50 years. If there were no other differences between two directions except having or not having Lina Khan, the difference is still massive. And there are tons of other differences.Personally, most of my time is focused on the bigger-picture issues, but those are also the hardest to change.

@photoncollector @strypey I suggest reading https://donellameadows.org/archives/leverage-points-places-to-intervene-in-a-systemAnd my own note:This isn't worst to best focus, just differences. Leverage points that need less effort also need greater movement to have an effect. Small movement at the greater leverage points does a lot.But where to focus depends. The answer isn't always just to focus on the hardest-to-move points simply because any movement really has a major effect.

Good intentions and righteous justice are not enough without **strategy** — especially when trying to *fix* things from a grass-roots and less-powerful position.(versus the ease of having power and of breaking things)Attuning to our feelings is a *separate* first step before deciding actions. Un-reviewed, un-questioned, no-discussion compulsive #activism will continue to LOSE against the strategic methods of those working to undermine healthy society.#politics #leadership

@strypey why-not-both? Surely there exist people within any group who have various views, but it seems clear that many people on both sides of the Palestine-Israel conflict have stories about their side being righteous and legitimate and the other not so. We can fairly discuss the reality of which sides in which situations are doing the most harm with their stories, but the only path to real peace is to get far more people to hold *compatible* stories that validate *both* groups.

Once again, by focusing on **monopoly power** as the over-arching dynamic, Matt Stoller sees the blindspots in the mainstream Lefthttps://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/monopoly-round-up-the-left-can-protestWhat if "No Kings" explicitly included *all* the oligarchs, even the ones associated with Democrats, like Gates and Soros and Mark Cuban, along with Kochs and Ellison and Musk And Zuck and Bezos and more…Crazy to let robust local manufacturing and independence from China ever be claimed to be a Right-wing political view…
