It's definitely the Palestinians who want to wipe out Israel. Oh wait ..."We wake up to a difficult morning for all of us. A morning that sharpens the cruelty of our enemies and the justice of our determined war against them until they are destroyed from the face of the earth."#BezalelSmotrich, Likud Finance Minister, 2025https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/542522/hamas-hands-over-bodies-of-youngest-gaza-hostages-taken-from-israel#Palestine #Gaza #genocide

@strypey why-not-both? Surely there exist people within any group who have various views, but it seems clear that many people on both sides of the Palestine-Israel conflict have stories about their side being righteous and legitimate and the other not so. We can fairly discuss the reality of which sides in which situations are doing the most harm with their stories, but the only path to real peace is to get far more people to hold *compatible* stories that validate *both* groups.

"Israel launched its war in the Gaza Strip after the Hamas-led attack that killed some 1200 people, according to Israeli tallies, with 251 kidnapped. The Israeli military campaign has killed some 48,000 people, Palestinian health authorities say, and left densely populated Gaza largely in ruins."#JamesMackenzie, 2025https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/542522/hamas-hands-over-bodies-of-youngest-gaza-hostages-taken-from-israel

@wolftune > why-not-bothThat strikes me as both-sides-ism. I'm not aware of any group who had the goal of wiping out Jews in Israel before the IDF began its ongoing war of occupation in 1948. And although there are certainly groups who've adopted that position in reaction to the ongoing aggression, illegal settlements, human rights violations, and so on, I don't think it's fair to say that any of them represent Palestinians as a whole.Smotrich OTOH is part of the elected govt of Israel.

@strypey well, here we are today. And huge numbers of Israelis believe that the Palestinians have no legitimate right to be there, and vice-versa.And *especially* in light of experiencing grotesque atrocities, entire communities and infrastructure destroyed, blatantly illegal killings and harassment in the occupied territories… there's no reason to think large portions of Palestinians are retaining let alone enhancing any view of Jews as having a legitimate right to be there.

(1/2)@wolftune > there's no reason to think large portions of Palestinians are retaining let alone enhancing any view of Jews as having a legitimate right to be thereI'm not sure it's helpful to make broad generalisations about how Jews or Palestinians think about the situation. This was kind of the point of the OP. OTOH I think it is worth noting the evidence that the majority of Israeli citizens support ceasefire. Presumably most Palestinians do too, but numbers are harder to gather.

(2/2)I worry we're given an intentionally slanted picture of mutual antipathy, serving those who profit (politically or financially) from keeping the conflict hot.

@strypey Mutual-antipathy is not universal nor inevitable nor insurmountable, but it's clearly prevalentIreland comparison is goodResolution would indeed come if all those fomenting and stoking antipathy would stop doing itWe can understand current sentiments separately from possibilities
