you don't solve for spam or harm reduction via network centralization since all you're doing is putting everyone in the same place. you end up centralizing whatever attack vector also. it gives the illusion of safety via a centralized platform which all hinges on the ability of a team to perform moderation... which it won't do well or consistently. the problem is, ironically, scale. it's that the system, distributed or otherwise, is just too big. too global. and moderation isn't scaling.

I don't know if one can solve moderation of social networks at global scale, centralized or not. centralization doesn't make it any easier except conceptionally. you could do distributed reputation which feels almost inconsistent-by-design or do hierarchical views where you make it harder for yourself to see things 'farther' away from you until you choose to do so. or outsource moderation as its own kind of service.

I do believe global social networks are just a bad design and that centralized ones are basically the worst kind of those... mostly actually because you have to hope your sense of moderation is reflected or be forced to endure it to have a voice. Individual-hosted / communal networks employing self-moderation and then federate content among their pockets via any kind of reputation make a bit more sense. Small private networks make the most sense, even if they feel like a regression.

if you want to solve moderation, impose it at the points where network scale changes and thus do what you can to sensibly constrict scale in an understandable and appreciable way.

https://yuzu-emu.org/ Poor Yuzu got the Nintendo hammer. They shall hopefully wake up again when preservation needs overtake capitalism. :blobcatcoffee:

I'm somewhat excited to see if the UltraHLE situation repeats itself for Citra/Yuzu. Though it is worrying since you really want emulation to mature before obscurity sets in ... and the complexity of modern systems makes it hard to 'start late'. There's a real preservation need for emulators during the lifetime of the hardware itself.

I continue to be annoyed that plagiarists publish infinitely more work than me. And probably less well-read!! :blobcatcoffee:

Got my mastodon instance up to the latest version and then, of course, re-added my ESSENTIAL update: making sure the "TOOT!" button exists. #BringBackTheToot

@foone if I'm understanding correctly... that's actually 100% the cursed thing that I'm up to right now except it is Borland C++ 2.0 https://gitlab.com/rawrs/borland-c-2 ... I could probably throw it up on a webpage real quick and tie it with some browser file system APIs

@foone I did a lot of likely silly work making my own file system API thing and then putting some async filesystem stuff into a fork of em-dosbox that can support a headless mode. but yeah, it shouldn't be too bad as long as dosbox can run it.

My boss complaining about some professional development things: "It's like when you have to learn assembly to get a CS degree... we'll never use that."Me, a person that taught assembly courses and writes it regularly: W...wh... *scoff!*

For one, web assembly exists albeit a much higher-level automaton than a normal CPU.More importantly, it remains a very appropriate place to view computation where it is obvious how to use it to think about tradeoffs between abstraction and efficiency."here's a thing that adds numbers. do you add more complexity? or just make it add very very fast?" and then, bam, now consider parallelism.Learning about how to think about abstraction is good!

I'll watch The Pitt, but only to see if somebody says "yinz" and if they talk about the devastating effect that the monopolized medical industry's aka UPMC's tax-exempt non-profit buy-up of property in spite of its incredible profits has had on the Pittsburgh culture and economy. :blobcatcoffee:

Folks will continue to litigate the federated social web because of some fever dream of what they think early Twitter was like when, in reality, the idea of a massively scaled, fully moderated, global social network will absolutely Never Ever Happen. It's not a flaw if it doesn't get there-- It takes massive capital to just pretend to get close. The flaw is that people continue to expect and value size. We've poisoned the potential for community because we refuse to accept it being small.

Federated protocols allow you to cultivate and build small specialized communities without cutting them off from global discovery ... not for emulating large content silos! :blobcatcoffee: :blob_floppy:
