you don't solve for spam or harm reduction via network centralization since all you're doing is putting everyone in the same place. you end up centralizing whatever attack vector also. it gives the illusion of safety via a centralized platform which all hinges on the ability of a team to perform moderation... which it won't do well or consistently. the problem is, ironically, scale. it's that the system, distributed or otherwise, is just too big. too global. and moderation isn't scaling.

I don't know if one can solve moderation of social networks at global scale, centralized or not. centralization doesn't make it any easier except conceptionally. you could do distributed reputation which feels almost inconsistent-by-design or do hierarchical views where you make it harder for yourself to see things 'farther' away from you until you choose to do so. or outsource moderation as its own kind of service.

I do believe global social networks are just a bad design and that centralized ones are basically the worst kind of those... mostly actually because you have to hope your sense of moderation is reflected or be forced to endure it to have a voice. Individual-hosted / communal networks employing self-moderation and then federate content among their pockets via any kind of reputation make a bit more sense. Small private networks make the most sense, even if they feel like a regression.

if you want to solve moderation, impose it at the points where network scale changes and thus do what you can to sensibly constrict scale in an understandable and appreciable way.
