What we want are measurements of how absorption changes with time as clumps pass through our line of sight towards the compact object. The usual way is to use spectral modelling - this allows exact measurements but needs long exposures. Bad for time resolution!Instead, we can use colors. They need short exposures, but are noisy & harder to model. I did develop an approach how to make use of the typical patterns in color space to do so: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020A%26A...643A.109G/abstract#VicisAstro10/11

What next for this research?1. Apply methods to more sources! Also to build a sample and test different star & binary properties e.g. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023A%26A...674A.147D/abstract & https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2021MNRAS.501.5646M/abstract2. Refine methods (better statistics tools, take more effects into account ...) - e.g. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023arXiv230414201H/abstract3. And of course we hope for better data with #XRISM and #Athena missions!#VicisAstro #XraysAreTheBestRays #SciArt #scicomm #wisskomm #VicisArt11/11

@Snowshadow it's even worse, it's folks who think that astronomers are mean and a disgrace to their field by saying that astrology us bogus.

I'm back to the Netherlands, the temperatures are in the very high 20ies (and it will not go below 19 at night) in a house that was built for summers in low 20ies 😭

A mindblowing set of images of what the flood in #Valencia looks like from space - images of the same region from 8 and 30 October (I've been to the area, this is scary):▶️ https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2024/10/Valencia_flood_disasterimage credit: USGS, processed by #ESAimages from the US Landsat-8 satellite

Today marks the 3000 km on my ebike. That thing changed my life.Seriously, if you are thinking about buying one - do it (if you can afford it; and if you can't and live in Germany or NL talk to me, I have funds earmarked for donation - [edit to add: offer gone!]). I knew how to bike but never did and now I 80% of the time bike to work and back (10km one way). And I on biking vacations and on bike rides with friends. It's good for my health, it's good for my mood.

A thing I started doing: when people cancel a meeting with me because they don't feel well or just say that they prefer to work from home that day because they are slightly sniffy or their throat is scratchy, I don't just say "sure, no problem" but explicitly thank them. There is, whether we want or not, pressure that people feel to come to work even if they don't feel 100%. It's important to acknowledge when someone actively works against this.

I hate it that mastodon does not allow you to turn off replies. I'd love to scream something into the world and I don't want anyone replying to it.And before I get a lot of mansplaining how it's people's right to reply: this is not even something controversial, just something I have no power to deal with any word-like feedback, no matter how well meant. And screaming out would help.

@strypey @inkorrupt *sigh* where did I ask for tips or to have mastodon functionality explained to me? I even explicitly wrote in the original post to avoid mansplaining replies and here we are 🤷‍♀️

You want to be sure your food is not poisonous and isn't making you sick in some way? Then the only way to do it is to grow it yourself. It's easy: just find the right farm, move there, learn how to plant and care for crops & veggies & fruit and how to store/pickle them. You can't afford farming machines? Here a schematic how to build them yourselves. Oh, you have a full time job? Well, others manage to run a farm next to one.Yes, this is a post about self-hosting (everything).

Having a #fairphone is fun: I've never experienced so much bonding over a device.People go "oh, you also have a fairphone?" and start a conversation 💚 And you suddenly feel extra connected to them.
