@stux I'm very new to Mastodon and am mystified by it. I've noticed that many servers seem to be experiencing heavy load that's causing a lot of slowness and timeouts -- but these are probably just growing pains!I appreciate all of the work you and others are putting in and I hope that most users are patient in the meantime!

Man, @owncast is so incredibly sick. I'm chomping at the bit to have the free time I'll need to transition to it as our channel's new primary platform. After using it daily for the past couple of months, it's done nothing but impress. For years, Twitch has had countless streamers by the balls, including me. Having a free and open source alternative that I can run on my own server for my channel's audience is hugely liberating. Finally, we'll really have our own space to be ourselves.

I like @matrix a lot, but one main feature preventing me from transitioning to it completely as a Discord alternative:I love that Discord features multiple notification 'levels': a small red dot for rooms that have new messages, and a large red dot for when you're mentioned or replied to.On Matrix, unless I'm mistaken, there's no way to know when you've been mentioned unless you disable notifications for other new messages. It's a deal-breaker. Is there a way around this?

@matrix Oh wow, this is perfect!! I just misunderstood @element's settings, since it just refers to everything as a 'Notification'. I had 'Notifications' turned on for everything, since I thought that, if I didn't, there'd be no way to tell when I was mentioned or when rooms had new messages.Thank you!

I finally set up a @peertube instance, and I'm excited to begin playing with it! As I continue configuring it, though, I'm struck by some confusing UI issues that I always find frustrating about Peertube.1.) Why do non-logged-in guests have a 'Publish' button in the upper right? This creates an unrealistic expectation that this platform is like YouTube and that anyone should be able to register and publish videos. It seems that 99% of instances don't work this way.#peertube #fediverse

@peertube 2.) For the same reason, why can't I hide the 'login' button so that guests viewing my instance can understand that this is a place for my friends and I to upload videos and for guests to only watch? It seems that most Peertube instances are meant for this. What percentage of people viewing any peertube instance will be logging into that instance? Very, very few.#peertube #fediverse

@peertube3.) Also, why are users prompted to log in when they want to 'Like' or 'Dislike' a video? They don't have an account and can't get one (99% of the time)!I guess those are my main concerns, and they're tied into one concept: PeerTube (wisely, I think) is imitating the YouTube UI, but not only is YouTube a platform with the resources to host countless users... It's also designed to strongly encourage people to use their Google accounts, which Google profits from.#peertube #fediverse

@peertubeWith Peertube, it isn't necessarily that way, right? The fact of the matter is that most Peertube instances will not be accepting registration, and they will not be encouraging users to upload video, simply because of technical limitations. There should be settings to hide the 'Publish' button unless logged in, and to hide the 'Login' button somewhere discrete. Viewers should be able to Like videos without being logged into that instance (such as via Fediverse).#peertube #fediverse

@gamingonlinux I'm really surprised to see all of this white-knight'ing for a big electronics / software corporation. Every time one of these corporations gets taken to task, it's good for consumers.1.) Valve certainly shouldn't be able to dictate how publishers set their prices on other platforms.2.) DLC should 100% be agnostic across platforms and there's no reason it should be difficult to implement.3.) If Steam has a monopoly on PC game sales, then its commission is necessarily excessive

@markwyner Did you know that @peertube instances can make their searches directly through Sepiasearch via its API?It's in Administration -> Configuration -> Basic -> Search. Here's my settings, so when people use the search bar on my instance, the results returned are from sepiasearch:

@peertube I love PeerTube's plugin system. Like so much about #PeerTube, it's slick, user-friendly, and technically impressive. The selection of plugins is great, too. Special shoutout to @John_Livingston's livechat plugin.

@peertube Thank you so much for this! I'm so grateful that low latency streaming's 'auto' quality was addressed, and I love the idea of centering the platform a video is hosted on. I think it'll make it much easier for people to understand the federated nature of PeerTube. You guys are amazing.
