@foone The practical limit is three on an 80386 with 16550 uarts directly on the 8 bit ISA bus. Yes, Digi and others made some special boards that let you have 8 or more serial ports (all multiplexed on one IRQ) , but you needed special drivers. I ran 4 and had to share IRQs. I wrote my own serial driver and it wasn't good code and would occasionally lock up, requiring a reboot. But dang it was cool having 3 serial terminals multiplexed over one modem.

@foone <shakes head> so many useless comments. I use mostly SanDisk. Micro SD in old pi...2? On 24/7, mounted noatime, ext4, but idle except for probably one or two access a month (it connected my USB scanner to Ethernet) lasted two to three years, went through three of them like clockwork.

@foone As others have commented, USB Power Delivery can let you select from a short list of voltages (5, 9, 12, 18, etc). Note that not all voltages are supported! 12 is optional in the spec. Smaller battery packs will only support 5 and 9V. And PPS is even more rare to find. Also, note that some USB hosts (i.e. laptops) do not re-negotiate voltage while connected. That means you should program it for a specific voltage first THEN plug it in.Good luck!

@foone $100 on Amazon buys you older dell micro form factor desktops, with power supply, ram, SSD. Spare parts and documentation will be available ~forever. Idles at 5 watts. The only real downside is the lack of ports. I buy then 5 at a time, they're useful for tiny servers. Also every Dell since forever comes with biOS controls that let you turn them on at night, or when power is restored. Great for remote backup servers. Power on, rsync from my house, turn off.

@foone "never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of mag tape" goes the saying. I know before multi gigabit interconnects, science data was transferred from site to site by a raid USB drive and overnight FedEx.

@foone Garmin has been very successful with transflective color LCD watch faces. Always on, Low power compared to OLED. Readable in full direct sunlight. Only readable in the dark if you turn on the backlight.

@kenshirriff a friend of a friend worked for the company that Intel decided to not hire (again) to prove that their float math unit was correct. I can try to put you in touch if you are interested in the human side of things.

@foone Pico W acting as a keyboard: https://learn.adafruit.com/diy-pico-mechanical-keyboard-with-fritzing-circuitpython/overview . Adding a WiFi page should be trivial, but performance will be lackluster given prior experience (have not tried pico 2w yet). I want to simulate a keyboard and mouse but send keystrokes via the VNC protocol.

@foone use case: portability. Visiting a server in a closet, it's easier to bring a dongle instead of a keyboard in case I need to reboot the server or adjust the BIOS settings. Use case: set up 3 new computers for a customer at a time. Of course in this case, real VNC is better, including video, but I have to get to that point first. In theory I could even automate keystroke sending or send to multiple simultaneously. CoLo: cables are always too short, self-powered WiFi dongle can be easier.

@foone once upon a time my laptop started getting typing and track pad problems. Then I replaced the swelled Li battery, and they started working again. The clue was the track pad was no longer an "innie" but an "outie" where it stuck out, above the level of the case instead of below. Good luck figuring your issue out

@foone Amazon search sucks. Google search still works pretty well for finding specific things. I search for """ site:amazon.com specific things -"not this" """ because Amazon doesn't believe in negative searches.

@pete @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite question: does anyone have"watts" numbers for towing a trailer with loads? I keep hearing"it's too hard" . For example someone said that 200 lbs of cargo was too much, yet an adult can weigh nearly that much, i.e. on a tandem. So I know that yes it's harder, but is it really that much harder? Also, it would give us better numbers to understand how many watts an ebike needs to offset the additional drag. #BikeNite #BikeTooter

@oheso @ascentale @PamelaSchure @bikenite knee pain can be tight , tired, overworked tendons. Gentle stretching at first, then more intense as you are sure it's not injured. I've done long term damage to myself encountering knee pain too many times before seeking advice.

@sunbeam_rider paint is the easy part, but what about the primer, clear coat, and other finishing steps? Those are much more important to keep the paint from fading due to UV exposure and producing a hard exterior shell that resists physical damage. Also, be careful to not accidentally paint your neighbors' cars, something the pros solve with a paint booth. And don't breathe the fumes.

@foone WordStar was one of those programs that self edited. Fortunately it was only really manifest when you modified the printer control codes. So copy, edit, and sometimes the program would no longer start. Restore, edit again, worked that time.

@foone I use p touch labels to mark where the ports are, both on the lid and inside the laptop, so I can plug stuff on without leaning to the side. Trim with scissors to the port width for easy identification
