The relationship between a user and their #mastodon instance is purely subsidiary, since a user can be blocked by the administrator. Is the list of blocked instances visible to a user on the server? I can understand how the administrator might not want to advertise those blocked instances, but what protection is their for users against over-zealous administrators?

@lauren I attended a session at a conference on Saturday titled "I call bullshit on generative AI because ________". Over a hundred people showed up even though it had parallel sessions. My feeling is that generative ML will gain traction in entertainment and art, but will have relatively little effect on search. It might affect SEO.

@lauren https://dkb.blog/p/bing-ai-cant-be-trusted for example. I'm willing to be convinced, but I've seen enough of these hype trains to be intensely skeptical. It feels like google assistant all over again.

@mastodonusercount charts without attribution to data are unverifiable.

@alex @mattblaze The hard core ActivityPub evangelists would suggest you rewrite that as #HardAgree (as if that means something).

Another failure by Google Assistant. I used to be able to tell my phone to set an alarm for 9:30 and it would just set it. Now it stops and demands a reason why. This makes my phone less usable, but it sounds like the typical Google grab for more user data.

@lauren I just disabled it since it wasn't doing anything useful any more.

@me I'm waiting to see factual comparisons instead of "OMG CORPORATIONS" responses. The ActivityPub protocol is poorly specified and the moderation protocol is server-based and poorly implemented. We'll see how bluesky compares, but given the very slow progress of activitypub, I'm not holding my breath.

@lauren I won't dispute it, but I wonder how many said the same about Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton.

@fsf in other words, GPL inhibits distribution of source code.

@strypey @creativecommons @internetarchive @zotero it's a nice idea, but things like arxiv require funding. How would we organize this?

@wjmaggos @3dcandy I think you are underestimating the human confusion that choosing a server causes. If a decision is required and it's unclear what the consequences of the decision are, then many many people will simply avoid the decision.
