I wondered if there were excellent lectures not appearing in Google searches. Checking MIT OCW, I found many high-quality lectures, like Geometry and Quantum Field Theory, which aligns with my interests. It's puzzling why Google doesn't rank such valuable information higher. Perhaps the demand is low due to the effort required. Nonetheless, I'll search OCW content from now on.Source: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/18-238-geometry-and-quantum-field-theory-spring-2023/

(1/?)The idea of a unitary "search engine" for the web made sense when the web was a niche medium. A patchwork of small websites, made by a few thousand people. Now that the web has eaten our entire information space, the whole idea is a bit suspect.I suspect that effective solutions to the online search problem will be found in dozens of specialised search engines. Some with indexes curated by humans, especially in cases like scholarly works.#search #WebSearch #SearchEngine@sugiyama738

(2/2)Ironically, even Goggle saw the need for this, which is why they started working on Scholar in the early noughties. No idea how effective that is now, but Goggle were never the right home for an effort like this.

(3/3)Imagine the academic librarians, Open Access activists and technologists who got involved in projects like @creativecommons, Ibiblio.org, @internetarchive, Arxiv, and @zotero, getting together to create robust academic search tools, as a not-for-profit commons.#CreativeCommons #InternetArchive #Ibiblio #Arxiv #Zotero

@strypey @creativecommons @internetarchive @zotero it's a nice idea, but things like arxiv require funding. How would we organize this?

@tragiccommons @strypey @creativecommons @internetarchive @zotero Can't we just be scrappy? Ideally, sure, put together a manhattan project of the humanities and build the modern library of alexandria, but failing to fund such a project, you can go a surprisingly long way with a farily tight budget, since hardware has gotten so cheap (especially if you stay out of the cloud and its rentseeking). On top of that, my experience is it's relatively easy to get public funding in this space.
