With much trial and error and confusion I was able to construct the required not-quite-null modem and bootstrap Kermit via hex files, then move on to more important things.

All three Rifa capacitors on this power supply are cracked and probably would have blown up at some point. Luckily I have been watching a lot of #retrocomputing videos and knew to keep an eye out for them. Anyway, here begins a new project thread 🧵 so prepare accordingly.

Right. So the plan for today is to use a sunny peroxide bath to bleach away the yellowing on this Osborne 1 case. The bricks are just for displacement (they're cheaper than peroxide by volume).

@alexelcu Hey if you like to rely on the buggiest, flakiest, least-specified, worst documented part of the world’s most complicated student-written compiler who am I to argue?

Looking at Pascal for the first time in 35 years and it seems very good.

@alexelcu @deech Blue??!? Two shades of green should be enough for anybody. This is v3.00 on the Osborne 1.

I realize I'm late to the party, but I just switched from Intel i7 to Apple M2 Max and the difference is staggering. Things happen instantaneously, like they're supposed to. Amaze.

@alexelcu @nuttycom Yes, “healthy appetite” is perfectly cromulent euphemism here too. Correct usage.

It would be really cool if I could set a breakpoint in my code and have it stop there so I could examine local variables and so on. Someone should invent that.

My HP #penplotter only speaks GPIB, so I have been talking to it via an Arduino Uno running AR488 with a hand-wired shield, which I just replaced with a Nano on a nice little PCB and it works great!DM me if you would like a board, I have a few extras. It's wired like the first diagram in Appendix A of the AR488 manual.
