It boots! Ok first order of business (before I even put the case back together) is to copy the 40+ year old system disk onto, uh, another 40+ year old disk, which is all I have on hand. Need to find some new(er) old stock.The screen is green phosphor. I don't know why the middle part looks blue on camera.

With much trial and error and confusion I was able to construct the required not-quite-null modem and bootstrap Kermit via hex files, then move on to more important things.

The Osborne 1 Technical Manual is 589 pages long and includes disassembly instructions, explanations of every subsystem, full schematics and parts lists, data sheets for key parts like the disk and IO controllers, and full commented ROM source.

All three Rifa capacitors on this power supply are cracked and probably would have blown up at some point. Luckily I have been watching a lot of #retrocomputing videos and knew to keep an eye out for them. Anyway, here begins a new project thread 🧵 so prepare accordingly.

Right. So the plan for today is to use a sunny peroxide bath to bleach away the yellowing on this Osborne 1 case. The bricks are just for displacement (they're cheaper than peroxide by volume).
