During each of my interviews I stressed, over and over again, how this was a situation that I, a well paid tech worker, would recover from but for most of our neighbors it was a devastating, life changing blow. I repeated countless times that I was speaking for others who weren't in the same position of privilege as I was.The headlines that got run were "Silicon Valley is so expensive even this Google employee can't live there." The stories were all about the impact to me personally.

And, predictably, the comments on those stories were mostly flippant, dismissive "Oh, boo hoo, look at the poor tech bro whining about a longer commute to his cushy job!" Which was incredibly frustrating because that was the exact opposite of what I was trying to do! It was never about me.Anyway, we DID manage to move the needle with the new owners and they gave the residents more time to move and some financial assistance, which was a better outcome than I think many of us hoped for.

Anyway, I see a lot of comments about celebrities speaking out about the writers/actors strike saying "Oh, boo hoo! Millionaire actor doesn't think they're being paid enough!" and it makes me think back to my much smaller-scale experience.Because it's pretty clear to see that they're not speaking out for their own sakes. They're using a position of privilege to try and support the less privileged people around them. And the media doesn't like running that headline.

Sorry, Google, but I don't think moving the temperature sensor out of my bedroom is going to solve climate change.

Lynx is sending out these emails to Kickstarter backers, which sounds good but they've been in a state of perpetually "about to ship" since January.I really do want them to find some success in this space! AR/VR needs options that aren't from tech giants. It's too bad that the delays mean they're arriving opposite the Quest 3 instead of the Quest 2. Against the Q2 they would have had a significant hardware advantage to hopefully help bootstrap a software ecosystem.

@mcc I am eternally grateful that my job involves shipping digital bits and not physical ones. If I had to actually manufacture stuff for a living I'd starve, so I've got all sorts of respect for those that do!I'd still be willing to believe that they ship to all their backers before the Vision Pro is out, but as far as more general availability goes... yeah. Apple may get there first.

I'm still interested in Lynx because they've talked a lot about leaning into WebXR, and if the device ends up being nothing more for me than a WebXR dev device that I can wire to my desktop as a substitute for my ancient Vive Pre I'll be happy.Hope they can find more success than that, though!

Watching the scramble to figure out if LK-99 is an Actual Thing™ is fun, but I'm hearing comments like "If it's real it'll mean high-speed trains everywhere!"My dude, we could ALREADY have high-speed trains everywhere. The resistance in the wires isn't the thing that's blocking it from happening.

Anyway, if you're interested in possibly maybe superconductors this is a decent summary of what's been going on: https://eirifu.wordpress.com/2023/07/30/lk-99-superconductor-summary/

I want you to imagine any company on the planet getting on the phone with Apple and saying "Yeah, so you're gonna pay us any time someone downloads an app using our tech from your store."https://twistedvoxel.com/unity-playstation-xbox-nintendo-pay-on-behalf-of-devs/

I have a rental car and occasionally one of these triangles on the dashboard will start blinking and making very angry noises at me and I don't know why.I am used to dealing with it when the triangles are upset, but NOT LIKE THIS!

@slightlyoff I've been very happy with the HP Dragonfly Chromebooks that are Google's standard-issue these days. And that's for doing WebGPU work!Problem is they're stupid expensive, but I can't find the price of the Asus so I don't know if it's a reasonable alternative.

TypeScript fixed a longstanding bug for me today!I had an older, vanilla JS WebGPU cascading shadow map demo where I simply could not figure out why my shadow filtering didn't seem to work.Today I tried porting that code to a newer TypeScript code base and... Ah. That's why.

Spherical Harmonics question: my understanding is if you're given data for 2 bands (9 coefficients) but only want to use 1 band, you just use the first 4 coefficients and corresponding factors unchanged? Intuitively it feels like you'd get darker results, but from what I've read it doesn't seem like Basis functions are adjusted at all regardless of the number of bands.

A year ago I installed solar panels+batteries, and now have a year of electric bills to compare.2024: $4,133.132025: $655.62!The entire year was less than the previous year's July bill. Also got an EV last year so that amount ALSO includes my "gas" costs from charging at home. (~$1500/year with my prev gas car.)Hard to think of a pair of purchases I've been happier with!
