Also, yes, many of the anti democratic habits and values were in place for the neo-con GWB administration (in some ways the policies and relinquishing of democratic norms of the Bush administration were worse than Trump). 1/2

I’m half way through the campus visit of the second candidate for a faculty position, the search I’m running (outside my own area—I’m just the chair doing all the wrangling, whereas the rest of the committee are experts in the area). if I ignore the chaotic neoliberal mess that is the academic job market, this is really fun. Learning so much and am inspired and humbled by these young scholar-teachers. These moments of intellectual and pedagogical light are why I still do this job.

@CitizenWald I basically just frame it in my head as supporting colleagues who are earlier in their careers. I’m a full professor so am somewhat shielded if things go sideways. I also feel the responsibility to the young scholar candidates Intensely.

@CitizenWald I hear you. We are also understaffed, hence my chairing this committee. I got reminded I’m working outside of my area when after a candidate event the experts on the committee were cranky because they got a foundational idea completely wrong, but I was enraptured because it was all new to me and I was enjoying learning. 😂

Does anyone know if there's a way to download videos that people post? Someone just posted something I'd like to use in class, but, um, I don't want to have my entire Masto account displayed up on a screen... (downloading pics is pretty straightforward, but not so videos). UPDATE: Thanks to friendly mastonauts, i figured out that if I put the video in full screen, it then given me the option to save it. Thanks everyone for your help!

I like my (non sexual) vices, mainly smoking a pipe and drinking whiskey, but I don’t do them a lot. Couple times a month, usually. And I savor them. I’m excited because I ordered a little metal stand to hold my pipe so I don’t have to clench it with my teeth for 20 minutes. I’m not excited that I just dropped and shattered my last whisky tumbler. (I also use tumblers for wine, Italian style, despite having lived in France for a few years and Northern California for 23. Sue me.) Sorry for the super bourgeois question, but…any recommendations for good whiskey tumblers/glasses? 🥃Edited: I’m clearly not a cool whiskey drinker, as I called the glass a tumbler, but have been informed that they are lowball or rocks glasses. 🤓

#Introduction Because I’m getting lots of new followers, a quick caveat:This is a personal and fun space for me, not professional or Scowling and Very Serious account. I’m an academic (of middling quality) and I do toot about my job and my work, but mostly from a human perspective (e.g., kvetching about teaching and admin work, hand wringing about imposter syndrome, squealing excitedly about something cool I just found). I also toot about my life, things that make me happy or sad, and about being gay and old, oh and going to the gym (sometimes all in one toot!). I say ‘fuck’ a lot and talk about sex and joke about farts. When I post about politics, I’m usually pissed and venting, not trying to be Very Smart™. Also I like to keep things moderately campy by engaying as many toots as possible (e.g., mentioning a politician’s bedroom eyes or quoting Bette Davis).

One thing: I really wish the MSM would *stop* saying "hush money to a porn star" and "cover up an affair". He was convicted of ELECTIONS FRAUD. This *matters*. Having sex (barely consensual if it all) with a porn actor is NOT illegal, nor is lying about it to your wife. Spending campaign money to influence an election by manipulation of information and the media: Illegal. This is about elections and core democratic principles.
