       I’m half way through the campus visit of the second candidate for a faculty position, the search I’m running (outside my own area—I’m just the chair doing all the wrangling, whereas the rest of the committee are experts in the area). if I ignore the chaotic neoliberal mess that is the academic job market, this is really fun. Learning so much and am inspired and humbled by these young scholar-teachers. These moments of intellectual and pedagogical light are why I still do this job.

       @toddo ramping up for the same here (2x). I told them these were not my fields and I did not feel particularly competent to lead here. They said I had some other quality that justified the assignment.

       @CitizenWald I basically just frame it in my head as supporting colleagues who are earlier in their careers. I’m a full professor so am somewhat shielded if things go sideways. I also feel the responsibility to the young scholar candidates Intensely.

       @toddo In our case, it's more that we are understaffed, but I think it is also a factor here: I've been around for awhile, have done these sorts of things before, etc. (happy to serve: I just try to be very careful not to claim competencies I do not have)

       @CitizenWald I hear you. We are also understaffed, hence my chairing this committee. I got reminded I’m working outside of my area when after a candidate event the experts on the committee were cranky because they got a foundational idea completely wrong, but I was enraptured because it was all new to me and I was enjoying learning. 😂
