@clive Designers and publishers and content strategists and information architects and UX writers need a word to describe all of that stuff, and that word is CONTENT

@Rycaut @clive @jdp23 the stuff about underpopulation in the "developed world” is genuinely unnerving to me

@clive I think in one of my Message essays I called ours “the cassette generation” — maybe the one on Back to the Future?

@clive Broke out my Lenovo the other day. Partly I use it less, but it has 100% outlasted THREE much more expensive Apple laptopsDebating trying out a Windows and Linux dual boot on that machine, especially since it's not eligible to upgrade to Windows 11

@clive Aww that stinksI've recently switched to Ulysses and I find it's better and faster for notes, but I opened up Scrivener and do like how it manages longer projects. Also Ulysses is Mac-only; an even bigger limitation

@clive Oh -- one addendum I'd add to your ThinkPad post is that it's 100% the T-series ThinkPads that are built like that and work like that. A lot of the other Lenovo laptops (including ones they try to pass off as ThinkPads) aren't nearly as durable or customizable and they have keyboards just as shitty as every other company’s

I wrote about Textcasting, @davew’s project to rethink social media and revive the blogosphere. I have some ideas on how to help; maybe you do too! https://kottke.org/23/11/the-future-of-rss-is-textcasting-1

@clive @Wolven I wrote a little bit about Bishop as an AI character in this Medium piece on Aliens. Would be fun to revisit the whole trilogy. https://medium.com/message/why-james-camerons-aliens-is-the-best-movie-about-technology-4741e666e07a

What if Twitter was actually the perfect exit for Elon Musk, as he wanted to go full-on bigot online and knew that would make his positions at Tesla and SpaceX untenable? He needed a hobbyhorse for hate and he made it the place we used to all hang out

@taylorlorenz It's not unique to Mastodon (and Ernie to his credit doesn't claim so), but it's certainly a strong current here. I would also say it's common in the coding/open-source community, although again, you can also find it anywhere where people want to one-up each other by showing off how much they know.

@clive the idea I come back to is that roads, lights, stop signs, sidewalks, crosswalks, etc., are all a system. We’re asking everyone to follow the rules for everyone’s benefit. And sometimes those rules can bend for pedestrians and cyclists at low weights and speeds, but it’s still dangerous! A car swerving out of its way to avoid you going the wrong way on the road is dangerous, even if you’re not the danger. And the more weight and speed you have, the more dangerous you become.

@ChrisWere oh I’m bougie these days, so I like the Fox Point blend from Penzeys. It’s got freeze-dried shallots in there, it makes everything good. I never voted in local elections before I met my first wife, partly because of age and moving around a lot. Our first state senator was Barack Obama.
