Regular reminder that the literal first full conversation in ALIEN is a contract negotiation, and that everything that goes wrong throughout those movies happens because the Weyland-Yutani Corporation programmed all of its "AI" systems to put any possibility of profit over and above the lives of the crew.

@Wolven the 12yo and I started to (re)watch it. Ripley tells them it’s an *illegal* contract, because even though Brett and Parker’s contract says they get half-share, legally they’re entitled to get a full-share.It’s kind of weird how it plays out, because the everyone is ignoring them, because it seems like everyone knows the law, but Brett and Parker. There’s not even solidarity, just the assumption that they’ll get their share, and so they should stop complaining. Tricking dupes into agreeing to be paid below minimum, is tottally on brand for Y-T, but if I wrote the scene, Dallas and Ripley’s reaction would be different.

@Wolven Said it before, will say it again: I'd watch a movie in that universe with no Alien in it. It's just the most realistic dialogue. I used to be an IT contractor – just rings so true to me.

@Wolven I'm always minded to remember that Ripley spent the film undermining her boss, only to take over and become an even worse boss once Dallas had been given the pharyngeal jaw treatment in the vents.After all, apart from being a domineering arsehole, she gets everyone else killed. Apart from the cat. Perhaps then the real lesson of the film is that management is always fucking crap.

@Wolven What's even more, the entire Alien universe revolves around how Wey-Yu and other corporations try to squeeze the maximum profit out of what's essentially a living biological weapon and a clear and no small threat to human life. It's an ever present concept in the movies, games, comics, you name it.

@Wolven hmmm...and company representatives are inhuman agents for the system that will murder you for profit...that tracks 😅Funny how one of the most accurate predictions of our era involved chest-bursting aliens. Riley tries to quarantine exposure, and her supervisor insists on not following the workplace safety rules. They are facing a threat that can infect their bodies and kill them...and are told to go back to work. Heck, they were all intentionally exposed to it in the first place because the corporation calculated they could still make a hefty profit if several of them died....oof, this is a little too real 😅
