@futurebird There are a reasonable number of my friends who carry a Leatherman in their purses. Not having a purse, I just carry one around otherwise. They're smol, useful, fairly heavy, and serve as a heck of a lot more than just 'shank'. I don't think any single one of us would want to carry around a 'tactical sharpie'.Hell, I have a keychain sharpie floating around somewhere. It serves as a marker, and if I need to stab someone, I can just position the keys between my fingers and punch. (I don't intend to. I'm just saying, I'm a woman in 2025.)

@Nonilex The odds that they'll not do this to non-immigrants approaches zero in a fashion not unlike a tennis ball rolling into a black hole. The fact that this would condemn US citizens to a wasting death is in their minds a feature, not a bug.

@futurebird Honestly sounds like Cuomo's just wanting to be a king himself, and upset that NY voters aren't interested in having one.

@foone Does it tie certain events to how much real time has passed rather than framerate? That's the only thing that leaps immediately to mind.

@Nonilex There is a very specific term for this. That term is 'white elephant'. It refers to a 'gift' which is, on paper, quite expensive or otherwise valuable, but in reality has no functional, practical justification for the recipient, and indeed costs far more to maintain than it could ever hope to be worth. I suspect that it was gifted as a joke by the Qatar royal family, seeing if Trump would be stupid enough to grasp it with both his grubby mitts - and sure enough, he did.Even avoiding the sociopolitical ramifications of the most irrational, fathomlessly greedy, unintelligent man ever to fill the high chair being yet more beholden to Qatar, it's an unmitigated disaster of a decision, and I wonder how much of it was just because Trump thinks that style is substance.

@futurebird There are absolutely, completely, most assuredly not 2,300,009 invisible vampire ghosts out to assist the rebels, and I don't know where you got that idea, stop spreading despondency right this instant.(H/T: Discworld, Interesting Times)

Dear Liberal Government:I understand that your Chicago Schooled brains may find this difficult to understand, as your whole worlds revolve around capitalist economics, but here's a little tip for you, a word in your shell-like ears. The purpose of the post office is to deliver mail. It's not supposed to make money! Charges and fees are meant to defray the costs of running it, most of which are gathered through taxes and apportioned through Parliament. This is not rocket science! Not everything has to be financially solvent! The returns from the delivery of mail, especially to rural Canadians, far and away outweigh the cost of service!I swear to fuck, fiscal conservatives will throw away a $100 to save a dime.#canpoli #mail #canadapost #economics

@futurebird I'm reminded of an anthropological story -- not sure how apocryphal it is, but it's been cited many a time -- about finding ancient evidence of a once-broken femur which was healed. That doesn't frequently happen without a community around which is willing to provide aid, be it for altruistic reasons or otherwise -- so it was considered as proof of at least the ability to form a community. (I wouldn't call it proof of sophonce, of course. Animals form communities, that's hardly a point of argument.)Not sure why it leaps to mind. Possibly because conservatives have always been wont to eliminate the very common desire to provide care to those who need it, so that they're 'normal'.

@futurebird I picked up two boxen of those, they're not bad. I wouldn't say great shakes, but they're at least on par with regular cheerios.

@stux A privacy hell, and they don't even work -- by all accounts rather than returning a page about what you ask them, they feed up slop and gibberish, just like any OTHER mass-marketed LLM program.Which makes them a lie in two parts - they're not intelligent, and they're not browsing the web, they're just pretending to. The 'artificial' bit is probably true.

The year is 2004. I'm downloading Java so that I can play Puzzle Pirates. The platform sucks, but it's all we have. The year is 2025. I'm updating Java so that I can play Minecraft. The platform sucks, but it's the only version worth playing.

@Nonilex Impressive that they denied cert. I'm glad, to be sure, because this was a bullshit case from a bullshit person indulging in bullshit.I do want to say that I want to see Clarence Thomas faced with the same sort of arguments in a case about quote-unquote 'miscegenation'. Oh, what's that? It's wrong that people are threatening your marriage to Ginny? Well maybe you shouldn't have been a bigoted fuckstick.(I don't want such a case to get anywhere, I just want him to feel what it'd be like to have your marriage threatened.)

@futurebird We need to fix this. Get some of the cheapest ground pork sausage and chop it into balls, fry them up, and put onto a slab of bread with a bunch of tomato paste and the driest shredded cheese known to man or god.

@futurebird I consider her to be incredibly credulous. The things she believes and advances are frankly absurd things for anyone with a functioning noggin to believe, but smarter people have believed stupider things. It's just disorienting to realize that someone who's willing to believe in a faked moon landing could be otherwise capable of logical reasoning, and a little disconcerting to remember that being smart in some ways is often no obstacle to being stupid in a lot of others.

@futurebird This tells me than that his execution was premeditated. Or at least, it waves a giant hand right towards those two smoking guns.I have no doubt that the Gestapo jackboots who murdered him had him on a list of acceptable targets to murder, which is a hell of a thing to think about, a murder list, now isn't it?
