On Feb 24th, the Drug Enforcement Agency announced some stricter-than-anticipated changes to #telehealth. In proposed rule DEA-407, doctors would be required to see a patient in-person before prescribing #ADHD medications. One point many folks seem to miss is that this is an equity issue.Access to healthcare varies based on geography, income, race, sexual orientation and gender, disability, and other factors. In-person doctor's visits are NOT easy for everyone.https://apnews.com/article/prescription-drugs-medication-opioids-health

Disparities in access are complex but serious. For example, folks in rural areas have a harder time accessing care: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.puhe.2015.04.001, elderly have unmet needs: https://mdpi.com/1660-4601/12/2/1745,and structural racism has a notable impact: https://doi.org/10.1111/ajes.12230Telehealth is one tool that can help reduce these barriers: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ypmed.2023.107426, https://sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/10/221012132337.htm, https://doi.org/10.3122/jabfm.2022.03.210509. Telehealth can't remove every barrier, but it certainly appears to be a promising tool.

For those arguing that requiring one in person visit isn't the end of the world, for some people, it will mean the difference between seeking treatment now or delaying it. It will mean the difference between finding an appointment this month versus in six months. It will be another barrier for some folks who already have numerous barriers to receiving care. It just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back and means someone decides to forgo treatment entirely.

Folks use technology in different ways and many of the assumptions from educators are ableist. -The student taking photos of slides may have ADHD and struggle to remember details.-The student typing their notes may have arthritis and have difficulty holding a pen.-The student recording the lecture may have auditory processing disorder and will create a transcript later.#teaching #education #ableism #HigherEd #learning #notetaking #notes

When I first found effective #ADHD meds, I mainly felt angry. I was angry that I had struggled, angry I carried so much self-hate for issues that it turns out were due to ADHD, angry that no one told me things should be easier, angry everyone else was blissfully not ADHD.Most of this anger subsided with time, although in some cases it took lots of time. Some of it has shifted. I'm angry for the injustices disabled folks face, angry more folks aren't allies, angry at institutions.

All The Things ADHD is a great podcast by two academics: @Readywriting and Aimée Morrison. If you're looking for some particularly good places to start, I recommend S5 E8 Neurodivergent college survival tips, S4 E13: What if, wait for it, we didn’t have to fundamentally change who we are to be successful?, and S4 E21: The Sh*t Sandwich.#AcademicChatter #Disability #HigherEd#Accessibility #DisabledInHigherEd #DisabledStudents#ADHD #Neurodivergent #Autism

Here's the thing about #AciWriMo and having ADHD. ADHD means my brain works differently, right? As anyone with ADHD knows, there are times we want to complete a task, we know there are consequences to not completing the task, but we just can't get our brains to cooperate. (Our motivators are different than neurotypical people, remember). I really value the times when I am able to focus and feel motivated towards completing a task; more-so than most neurotypical people, I would guess. (1/)

How does this relate to #AcWriMo? Well, working with my ADHD and working with my focus ability and energy levels are key to my work day. I don't fight it when I just can't get myself to work on a project I'm not currently interested in. I have my tricks for staying productive while working with my brain. So, on days in November when I had data analysis to do or a million meetings and I couldn't easily fit writing in, plus I didn't NEED to fit writing in, I didn't go out of my way to write.(2/)

Sure, I could have forced myself to write for #AcWriMo. I could have sacrificed sleep or chosen one task on my easy writing items list, but why? Because I set a goal of 30 minutes of writing per day? Hmm, this feels familiar... This feels like trying to fit my neurodivergent brain into neurotypical expectations of work, productivity, etc. I don't do this anymore. I refuse to fit into neurotypical standards just because they're the norm, particularly if fitting in won't help me. (3/)

My favorite part of my ADHD brain is how I am able to come up with nine million exciting ideas only to fail completely at organizing those ideas, tracking my progress within ideas, and subsequently get completely overwhelmed and exhausted. 10/10 Highly recommend. Not.#ADHD
