Here's the thing about #AciWriMo and having ADHD. ADHD means my brain works differently, right? As anyone with ADHD knows, there are times we want to complete a task, we know there are consequences to not completing the task, but we just can't get our brains to cooperate. (Our motivators are different than neurotypical people, remember). I really value the times when I am able to focus and feel motivated towards completing a task; more-so than most neurotypical people, I would guess. (1/)

How does this relate to #AcWriMo? Well, working with my ADHD and working with my focus ability and energy levels are key to my work day. I don't fight it when I just can't get myself to work on a project I'm not currently interested in. I have my tricks for staying productive while working with my brain. So, on days in November when I had data analysis to do or a million meetings and I couldn't easily fit writing in, plus I didn't NEED to fit writing in, I didn't go out of my way to write.(2/)

Sure, I could have forced myself to write for #AcWriMo. I could have sacrificed sleep or chosen one task on my easy writing items list, but why? Because I set a goal of 30 minutes of writing per day? Hmm, this feels familiar... This feels like trying to fit my neurodivergent brain into neurotypical expectations of work, productivity, etc. I don't do this anymore. I refuse to fit into neurotypical standards just because they're the norm, particularly if fitting in won't help me. (3/)
