On Feb 24th, the Drug Enforcement Agency announced some stricter-than-anticipated changes to #telehealth. In proposed rule DEA-407, doctors would be required to see a patient in-person before prescribing #ADHD medications. One point many folks seem to miss is that this is an equity issue.Access to healthcare varies based on geography, income, race, sexual orientation and gender, disability, and other factors. In-person doctor's visits are NOT easy for everyone.https://apnews.com/article/prescription-drugs-medication-opioids-health

Disparities in access are complex but serious. For example, folks in rural areas have a harder time accessing care: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.puhe.2015.04.001, elderly have unmet needs: https://mdpi.com/1660-4601/12/2/1745,and structural racism has a notable impact: https://doi.org/10.1111/ajes.12230Telehealth is one tool that can help reduce these barriers: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ypmed.2023.107426, https://sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/10/221012132337.htm, https://doi.org/10.3122/jabfm.2022.03.210509. Telehealth can't remove every barrier, but it certainly appears to be a promising tool.

For those arguing that requiring one in person visit isn't the end of the world, for some people, it will mean the difference between seeking treatment now or delaying it. It will mean the difference between finding an appointment this month versus in six months. It will be another barrier for some folks who already have numerous barriers to receiving care. It just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back and means someone decides to forgo treatment entirely.
