@penguin42 if it were, it'd be cold at the top. when it's cold at the bottom it's more likely to be accumulated sludge - which drips out of it every so often, so i'm pretty confident that's the issue

re LB: oh my god! one of my cats developed this! he was one of the ones that had full-on tonic-clonic seizures, complete with a dopey half hour afterwwards (once he spent the next half hour walking around in clockwise circles, but usually he'd just seem a bit out of it) and it seemed to be in response to certain sounds - at least sometimes. in particular, once i was stirring some soup, i think, in a cup... i didn't think it was usual, but i didn't know it was unknown at the time!funny thing, though. the last few months of his life, when the vet and i were fairly sure he'd developed bowel cancer but he was too frail to find out for certain, it abated

he also tended to have myoclonic jerks, for most of his life. since i also do, this occasionally led to nights where we'd wake each other up by having myocloni in rapid succession

pro tip, by the way: do not cradle your cat as they have a seizure. not unless you're wearing a leather jacket (that you don't mind getting perforated) or something.it wasn't so much the claws going into my arm, more the trying to get them out afterwards...

@edavies @clacke @lightweight as i understand it (and i've just spent the last hour checking), the LGPL only exists because there was some legal ambiguity as to whether linking to a dynamically-loaded library was derivation or not, which the LGPL resolves by explicitly saying "no, it isn't". but other than that, it *is* basically the GPL, and anything that does more than link to it is under the same obligations as a GPL'd program would be.but in practice, one could take a GPL'd library, write a server around it that responds to incoming RPC requests by calling the exact functions and sending out their replies, release the code to that server, and use it to serve one's proprietary program with exactly the same results as an LGPL'd equivalent.if only the industry had focused on making RPC/IPC fast enough that dynamic linking was seen as an unnecessary complication, the question wouldn't have arisen in the first place...

a new washing machine can be had for £270, installed and with the old washer/dryer recycled; but a new washer/dryer and recycling can't be had for much under £400. given that literally my only use case for a tumble dryer these days is towels (they don't fluff out as well when they're dried on a clothes horse), i'm thinking i might as well save¹ the difference¹ obviously, i mean "immediately spend the difference on something more fun"

i just wish that Argos offered recycling without installation, like they did until just before Christmas; i can install the thing myself, but i have no means to get a washing machine to a recycling point

so yesterday i discovered that at some point i had changed my bank card's PIN to something - and i remembered neither doing it nor what the new PIN wasand i had to ring my bank and ask them to please unlock my card... oopsfortunately the bank's app let me view my PIN, so that was a relief

@penguin42 as far as i can tell it doesn't store it locally. the same functionality used to be available on the website, but i guess they *really* ant people using the app instead (even though it's basically just replicating the web experience)

@penguin42 you'd think... but a lot of what banks do seems to be more for the coverage of their own backsides than for actual security. afaiu, PINs exist mainly so that they can say "you must have given your PIN to someone so they could clear out your account, so we're not reimbursing you" than for any reason of actual security

rural life in a nutshell: the bus just stopped on a random corner so that 2 passengers, and the driver, could nip to a nearby honour-rule farm produce stall and grab half a dozen eggs each
