I wish people would stop using “algorithm” as a synonym for ‘attention-grabbing monetization algorithm’. Even if we ignore that everything a computer software does is basically just algorithms, saying “there ia no algorithm” just feels wrong.“Only the people you follow, in reverse chronological order” = algorithm. “Previous, plus posts that your instance sees that include one of the hashtags you specified” = algorithm. And so on.

I think it’s harmful to demonize how computers work, and it shifts the blame to the wrong target. Condemn the bad things people choose to do to make money at your expense and not the tool.

For example, when talking about how timelines work on social media apps, saying, “On Mastodon, you control the algorithm and not the other way around” would IMO be a much better phrasing.

Each day I’m losing more and more respect for any self-proclaimed #OpenSource advocates still using Twitter as their main platform.

Finland has the most Fediverse servers per capita (that the FediDb knows of)?

The Finnish #eurovision host after a country in southern Europe votes: “Wow, isn’t it just such a ‘coincidence’ that these professional juries always so professionally can determine that their neighbor deserves the 12 points…”The same host, a moment later: “Wow, Sweden gave Finland 12 points! Thank you Sweden, we love you and knew that you appreciate good music!”

The #WSFS business meeting rejected the “let’s not let any new people participate in choosing where #worldcon is held” rule change proposal in today’s meeting. 👍#worldcon #glasgow2024 #WSFSBM

The motion to require future #worldcon bid locations to have a passing rank on some human rights indexes got pushed to a committee, to report back next year. This means that if it eventually passess, the first time the rule would be in effect would be when selecting the site for Worldcon 2029.#WSFSBM

This was a prime example of how difficult it is to make changes to the rules – any change needs to pass a vote in the business meeting of two consecutive Worldcons. But to be even considered, it first needs to survive an object to consideration, a motion to postpone it indefinitely, and finally an attempt to send it to a committee.#WSFSBM

I see there are still many people living in a fantasyland where if you write something resembling a (US) postal address on a piece of paper, that proves you are a human. 🙄#WSFSBM

Also, when it’s pointed out that postal addresses (and even the whole concept of having one) vary wildly across the world so recognizing (let alone validating) an address would probably not be doable, I do not think “we manage to do it in California” is the strong comeback you seem to think it is.#WSFSBM

@kechpaja @futurebird Haven’t heard that one but it’s a common folk myth in Finland that adders don’t like to be around ants, so I guess someone just made up a more exciting version of it (maybe after seeing ants on a dead snake)?
