       I wish people would stop using “algorithm” as a synonym for ‘attention-grabbing monetization algorithm’. Even if we ignore that everything a computer software does is basically just algorithms, saying “there ia no algorithm” just feels wrong.“Only the people you follow, in reverse chronological order” = algorithm. “Previous, plus posts that your instance sees that include one of the hashtags you specified” = algorithm. And so on.

       I think it’s harmful to demonize how computers work, and it shifts the blame to the wrong target. Condemn the bad things people choose to do to make money at your expense and not the tool.

       For example, when talking about how timelines work on social media apps, saying, “On Mastodon, you control the algorithm and not the other way around” would IMO be a much better phrasing.

       @tero When people say "Stop using algorithms," I read that as "Don't use known methods of solving a problem, just wing it." Which, of course, would produce very buggy code.
