@KimCrayton1 At the start of 2021 Tesla had a positive income of $438 million. They sold $518 million in carbon credits that same quarter. So 118% of their profit comes from carbon credits, and without that they would have been in the red.Source - https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36266393/tesla-made-more-money-selling-credits-and-bitcoin-than-cars/

@cfarivar I joined Mastodon after "toot" had been officially disbanded and I'm also willing to die on this hill with you. We can all toot together, no one can stop us! TOOOOOT

I want to announce a new project of mine, the Fediverse Almanac. It is literally an API for the Fediverse. It has data on over 20k active instances- not just Mastodon, but a variety of Fediverse services. You can use it to gather data on software, networks, and companies on the Fediverse. It has a robust Reputation section that aggregates and exposes ban data and keywords. It shows what instances are banned by others and why.#fediverse #fediblockmeta #opensourcehttps://www.fediversealmanac.com/docs

I've got ideas on how to build off of this- for example, letting smaller instances automatically pull and mirror blocklists of trusted instances onto their own. I'm also just super interested in seeing what the community does with it!

@Seirdy @aurynn @nova The endpoints to see which instances have banned other instances have been removed.

Fediverse Almanac has been taken down and the data removed as well. Everything has been purged, and it never had any data about any individual users to begin with, just metadata about the instances themselves.I am sorry for the discomfort this project caused.

@Craktok @atomicpoet @testing celebrities are the last people to leave because they require an audience. People didn't join facebook because of celebrities, and they didn't join twitter for it either. The celebrities came later. If the only people posting on twitter are right wingers then the people who want a left wing audience will go where their audience went. At this point the only thing people should be doing on twitter is helping people find their way somewhere else.

In exciting news I appear to be part of one of the first data breaches of the fediverse era!I got this email 20 minutes ago letting me know my data migration from mastodon.social was dumped in a breach. I'm going to be honest, I've got some opinions on the fact that a public bucket is used to store archives, with just obfuscation to stop people from downloading them.#mastodon #infosec #fediverse

I would *never* work for Google after they've done this.> Multiple people whose jobs were terminated told CNBC their access to doctors and specialists through Google’s on-site One Medical facility was also cut off the day of the layoff notification. That disrupted treatment that was ongoing at the time, they said. A laid-off senior software engineer said he lost in-person access to his primary care doctor of three years.#google #layoffshttps://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/17/google-nixes-paying-out-rest-of-medical-leave-for-laid-off-employees.html

@jwisser @mcc oh oh this also applies to the "we're a simulation" people too!A higher power (literally from a higher dimension) created us in their image, as above so below, and all the other religious fun but with math!

@simon I think it became obvious when phone networks started rolling out the 3g networks. Before that it felt like it was something only geekier people (such as myself) would be interested in, but once halfway decent internet was available on them it did seem pretty obvious that it was going to take off. What I don't think any of us realized is that the camera combined with social media would be the biggest reason why.

@qdot I have two libraries that are popular but they're in a language I haven't professionally used since 2013. I'm not sure I can recommend it. In fact I'm pretty sure I can't.

After years of dealing with wildfire smoke my wife and I left the SF bay area two years ago to get away from it all, moving to an area which didn't seem to get a whole lot of bad air.Jokes on us apparently, there is no hiding from climate change.#Chicago #Wildfires

This is amazingly fucked up. Broadcasters are trying to pass a new standard for broadcasting that allows them to encrypt their broadcasts. This means that people who use antennas to watch television will have to pay to upgrade their equipment and then pay on top of that to actually watch. The airwaves are a limited resource that broadcasters get free access to. This amounts to a huge policy change that steals a common resource for corporate gains.https://blog.lon.tv/2023/07/10/the-fcc-responds-to-my-atsc-3-encryption-complaint-they-want-to-hear-from-you/

@lps it's so funny you say that. I have a former colleague who worked for a three letter agency, and he always used to joke that "terrorists never use ssl"
