@nina @smellsofbikes Which Phil Wood hubs are you using? I have Phil Wood touring hubs on one of my touring bikes (White Industries hubs on the other).My city bike also has White Industries hubs (tho' a different model); I was cycling through the Panhandle (SF) one night, and a cyclist who was riding nearby said "Hey, is that a White Industries [model name] on your bike?" He could identify the specific model by the way the hub sounded. I was impressed. 🙂

@ninapaley @polarisera @ninafromcanadaeh I'm soooo glad I never really got into any given fandom to such an extent that I was invested in a particular reading of a character or characters, or their "relationships". It's fiction! Enjoy it, but it's not real!

@ninafromcanadaeh @ninapaley @polarisera I meant fans, but not just any fans - the type who get so involved in the lives of fictional creations (tv shows, movies, cartoons, books, etc) that it takes on the importance one normally gives to real life. That's what I was wondering about.

@nina Tangential, but I was sure it was "barcarolle". I looked it up, and for some reason some sources call it "bacarolle" and some "barcarolle" (tho' my meagre musical knowledge informs me that "barcarolle" is the right spelling). A Google search for "bacarolle" brings up 77k hits, whereas "barcarolle" gets 1.9 million. Further searches, including Britannica and French Wikipedia, have it at "barcarolle". Interesting, in any case - I wonder if it's just a common misspelling (as the French pronunciation elides over the 'r' - https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=pronounce+barcarolle+french&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 ). 🙂

It's kind of funny - I've noticed that the more highly educated a friend of mine is, the more disgusted and appalled they are by anything gender-critical I post on Facebook. Might've just lost 3 or 4 Facebook friends (one of whom is a long-time real friend) after I posted this rant by Meghan Murphy - granted, it's a bit more angry than my usual posted articles... But now I'm officially hateful and bigoted and anti-trans. It's not "why do you post this stuff? what are your beliefs on the subject?" but... hateful, anti-trans, bigoted, etc. I'm Jewish, and even I would ask someone saying anti-semitic things why they believe what they believe.https://open.substack.com/pub/meghanmurphy/p/no-speech-for-women

@ylem Ha! In the past, I've had to see a doctor in Scotland, Germany and France, and never had any problem making an appointment and seeing a doctor, sometimes the same day. But maybe things have changed recently in those countries.

@polarisera I've always taken "waiting for the other shoe to drop" to refer to someone taking off their shoes while sitting on their bed (typically upstairs, so this is from the perspective of someone downstairs), and meaning what @ninapaley said. I even remember some story (sci fi or fantasy) where someone makes a wish that causes someone to disappear, and they hear one shoe drop, but not the other.
