I decided to swap the wheels from one long wheelbase recumbent to another. Hibiscus had the snazzy Phil Wood hubs, and I wanted to try them on Connie, my separable Tour Easy. Only after I sweated and strained and swore for an hour and a half, and got everything back together, and re-adjusted the brakes, did I realize Hibiscus has an 8-speed drivetrain while Connie’s is 9-speed. But get this - they both seem to work just fine swapped. Connie’s 9-speed indexed shifter still works with the 8-speed cassette, even though I assume it can’t possibly be consistent on a longer ride. It’s not like that wonky old bike shifted perfectly before anyway, but it doesn’t seem any worse now. How can that be?

@nina mmmmm that Phil Wood sound. I have one bike with PW hubs and sometimes I turn it upside down and spin the rear wheel just to listen to it.

@nina @smellsofbikes Which Phil Wood hubs are you using? I have Phil Wood touring hubs on one of my touring bikes (White Industries hubs on the other). My city bike also has White Industries hubs (tho' a different model); I was cycling through the Panhandle (SF) one night, and a cyclist who was riding nearby said "Hey, is that a White Industries [model name] on your bike?" He could identify the specific model by the way the hub sounded. I was impressed. 🙂

I assume they’re touring hubs. Whatever they are, they are from the mid 1990’s.
